The suspect in an accident in Wisconsin over the weekend that killed three Girl Scouts and an adult will appear in court Monday, and charges against him are now more fully revealed. Per ABC News, a Chippewa County Jail official says 21-year-old Colton Treu faces suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and homicide by negligent use of a vehicle, with a police spokesman noting Treu allegedly left the scene after the accident Saturday morning and then turned himself in that night. Authorities say there were no blind spots on the stretch of road where the accident happened, per the Star Tribune. There’s not much information yet on the victims—their identities will reportedly be released Monday—but the school superintendent for the Chippewa Falls School District says two of the girls went to Halmstad Elementary School, while the third attended Southview Elementary School.
Officials say the adult who died was the mother of the Southview student. «This is a difficult time for our students, our family, and our staff,» Superintendent Heidi Eliopoulos says. Meanwhile, Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, issued a statement noting «the Girl Scout movement everywhere stands with our sister Girl Scouts in Wisconsin to grieve and comfort one another in the wake of this terrible tragedy.» A fourth Girl Scout who was hit is in critical condition. The Washington Post notes this is the latest in a handful of recent tragedies to befall the Scouts community, with a 14-year-old Boy Scout killed in Georgia by a falling tree in June, and two incidents in late September: a 12-year-old Boy Scout buried by sand in Michigan and a 12-year-old Long Island Boy Scout allegedly mowed down by a drunk driver. (There’ve been a rash of accidents at or near school bus stops.)
