‘Alita: Battle Angel’ is going to win the weekend, but that may not be enough for it to be a winner.

Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel dipped a bit on Friday, earning $7.53 million and bringing its two-day total to $16.23m. The good news is that the Robert Rodriguez-directed/James Cameron-produced sci-fi actioner is going to win the long weekend. The bad news is that we’re still looking at a $170m movie is a long way off from breaking even. If Alita: Battle Angel legs it out like A Good Day to Die Hard (and Alita is a much better movie than John Moore’s cinematic catastrophe), then we’re looking at an over/under $38 million five-day weekend.
Yes, it’s playing better than the skeptics predicted, but it’s still not doing well enough (thus far). For what it’s worth, A) that’ll be a much better launch than the likes of Valerian, Jupiter Ascending and Mortal Engines and B) it’s pretty good and may just kick a little butt overseas as well.
