LONDON, UK — The founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange has been sent to prison for fifty weeks after being convicted of jumping bail.
Despite his lawyers arguing he sought political asylum at the Ecuador embassy in London, which was a lawful measure, the judge at Southwark Crown Court did not agree.
«You had a choice and the course of action you chose was to commit an offense,» Judge Deborah Taylor said Wednesday in handing down the sentence. «You have not surrendered willingly. Had the government of Ecuador not permitted entry to the embassy, you would not have voluntarily come before the court,» she said.
