New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has received national attention and praise over how he’s handled the coronavirus pandemic in the Empire State, but is now facing mounting pressure to address the concerning amount of COVID-19 deaths that have occurred in nursing homes in the state.
New York is the state that has been hit hardest by COVID-19, leading the country in total number cases with over 333,000. Moreover, it leads the country in number of deaths with over 26,000. However, New York also leads the country with the most number of nursing home deaths.
According to The Associated Press, New York has over 5,300 of the country’s approximately 25,000 deaths that have occurred in nursing homes or assisted living facilities.
While Cuomo has worked hard to drive New York’s infection rate and its number of new daily hospitalizations down during the pandemic, he has struggled with nursing homes and the challenge they present.
