Michigan has surpassed 3,800 total deaths from the novel coronavirus.
The state reported 77 more coronavirus deaths and a total death toll of 3,866 as of 10 a.m. Friday, according to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services data.
An additional 977 positive cases were reported Friday, for a total case count of 42,356.
Also reported by the state Friday: a substantial rise in cases in West Michigan.

Fatality rate: 9%
This is out of those with known confirmed cases reported. Officials previously have said more testing of mild cases can cause the fatality rate to fall.
The fatality rate was reported as 8% last week.

Metro Detroit continues to be the hardest-hit region, but West Michigan has seen an increase in cases.
Detroit was reported by the state as having 1,040 deaths and 9,162 cases on Friday.
The city website notes state numbers may differ from city-provided numbers, dependent on download times.
