Students, faculty, staff and alumni of Lawrence Technological University marched with community members Saturday on 10 Mile Road, standing in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
About 300 people showed up to the two-hour protest that was planned after “All Lives Matter” was posted on the University’s Instagram account and later removed. The post was replaced with an apology from the school’s Marketing and Public Affairs office, stating that it was made by an intern, and that Black lives do matter.
Curleshea Daniels, the Black Student Union vice president, led the protest chants. Black students on campus need more support from the university, she said.
«We definitely do need to make some changes on this campus,» Daniels said. «There needs to be more African American scholarships. There’s no reason why half of the people I came in with are gone right now and are now at different schools because they can’t afford it.»
Jamiil Gaston, a speaker at the protest, asked the crowd where Southfield residents, Detroiters and southeastern Michigan students are on the campus.
