From a political standpoint, the Georgia races were a disaster for the Republicans.
It’s been such a tumultuous week that Tuesday’s long-anticipated runoff election for two U.S. Senate seats in Georgia seems like it happened an eternity ago. Nevertheless, the improbable victories of Democratic candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff over incumbent Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue certainly alter the 2021 political landscape. The races were close and the results are not yet certified, but Democrats will have a majority given that Vice President Kamala Harris will break the 50-50 tie. This will quite obviously boost the Biden administration’s opportunities to pass its legislative agenda, although it will still be a tough slog given that two Democratic red-state senators often side with their Republican colleagues. The latest political joke is to refer to President Joe Manchin – a reference to the centrist West Virginia Democrat who now holds the crucial swing vote.
