’90s kids and music buffs may recall the lyrics to «You Get What You Give» sparked a showbiz beef between the New Radicals and shock rocker Marilyn Manson.
The New Radicals are reuniting for the Biden Harris inauguration. Yes, the ’90s group with the infectiously beloved and era-defining track, «You Get What You Give.» The band is getting back together to perform that 1998 seminal hit at the virtual parade for the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on January 20. The pleasant yet unexpected surprise has caused a stir online as Twitter users react to the news—with plenty of Marilyn Manson jokes. «If there’s one thing on Earth that would possibly make us get the band together, if only for a day, it is the hope that our song could be even the tiniest beacon of light in such a dark time,» frontman Gregg Alexander said in a statement. «America knows in its heart that things will get bright again with a new administration and a real plan for vaccines on the way. That’s the message of the song… this world is gonna pull through,» the singer—famous for his bucket hat—added. Per Rolling Stone, the song has a special meaning for the Biden family. In Biden’s 2017 autobiography, «Promise Me, Dad,» the president-elect wrote that ‘You Get What You Give’ became the family’s «theme song» when his son Beau was battling cancer. «During breakfast, Beau would often make me listen to what I thought was his theme song, You Get What You Give’ by the New Radicals,» Biden wrote in the memoir. «Even though Beau never stopped fighting and his will to live was stronger than most—I think he knew that this day might come. The words to the song are: ‘This whole damn world can fall apart. You’ll be OK, follow your heart.'» The song was also used during the 2020 campaign trail, as the walk-on song for Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff. Alexander added in the band’s statement: «Performing the song again after such a long time is a huge honor because we all have deep respect for Beau’s military service and such high hopes for the unity and normalcy Joe and Kamala will bring our country again in this time of crisis.» ’90s kids and music buffs may recall the song’s lyrics sparked a showbiz beef between the band and edgy for the time, alt-metal shock rock performer Marilyn Manson.
