Speier said she had flashbacks to being shot in Guyana after hearing a gunshot inside the Capitol last week.
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) was shot five times and left for dead during the 1978 Jonestown massacre, and said Thursday the last place she expected to once again fear becoming the victim of gun violence was in the U.S. Capitol, as said she did last week. Speier got her start in politics working as an aide for Rep. Leo Ryan (D-Calif.), her political mentor who represented much of the same parts of northern California that Speier’s district encompasses today.
