MyKayla Skinner, the oldest gymnast on the United States’ women’s team, had a long road to the Tokyo Olympics. It’s a journey that took nearly a decade. Skinner wasn’t selected to compete in the 2012 Olympic Trials and then came a step closer in 2016, being chosen as an alternate for the Rio Games, but not an official spot on the team. When she had a chance to qualify for Tokyo this year, she placed fifth in the all-around and was named as the plus-one specialist. While she didn’t participate in the team competition, she traveled with the U.S. to Tokyo as an individual competitor. Now, she will replace Simone Biles in the vault final. Biles will not compete in the vault or uneven bars finals.
