Here’s a look at the Deseret News star prep athletes of the week for Week 1 in football, volleyball, girls soccer, boys golf, girls tennis, boys cross country and girls cross country.
Football Octavian Heflin, West Jordan (Sr.) Senior running back Octavian Heflin had a great start to the 2021 season on Friday night. He carried the ball 22 times for two touchdowns in leading West Jordan to the strong 35-14 win over Woods Cross. He opened the scoring with a one-yard TD run just a couple of minutes into the game and then later in the third quarter pushed the advantage to 28-7. “He is a very hard runner. He likes to actually run people over rather than use his speed. He brings a special dynamic with our offense where he can make a big play catching in open field and when he runs the ball. He is a big playmaker. He gives a lot of credit to our line for opening up big holes to go through,” said West Jordan coach Ron Halbert. Girls soccer Lily Boyden, Skyline (Sr.) Skyline is off to a great 4-0 start this season, and the finishing of senior Lily Boyden has been one of the keys. The Washington State commit has recorded eight goals and four assists this season, which includes a hat trick in a 5-2 win over Bonneville last week. That hat trick include a goal scored with her left foot, her right foot and her head. “Lily Boyden is fast. Amazing foot skill. Not afraid to take on several defenders at the same time,” said Skyline coach Yamil Castillo. Volleyball Treshor Phelps, Enterprise (Sr.) Enterprise setter Treshor Phelps helped her team open the season with a strong 25-23,25-22,25-15 victory over Canyon View last week.
