Colorado attorney general Phil Weiser announced the charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide just over two days after the two-year anniversary of McClain’s death.
A Colorado grand jury has handed down charges to three police officers and two paramedics in the death of Elijah McClain, a Black man who died after he was put in a chokehold and injected with a ketamine in a suburb of Denver in the summer of 2019. He said several of the five would face additional charges. According to records, McClain,23, was stopped by Aurora police on the night of Aug.24 while walking home from a convenience store after a 911 caller had reported a man wearing a ski mask and waving his hands who seemed “sketchy.” Body camera footage shows officers stopping McClain “because [he was] being suspicious.
