Ian is a hurricane again. Now the Carolinas are preparing for its second act, expected to be less forceful.
After pummeling Florida, Ian has restrengthened to a hurricane over the Atlantic Ocean, now threatening to trigger dangerous flooding in North and South Carolina.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded Ian back to a hurricane after it weakened to tropical storm status. After leaving millions without power and submerging communities on Florida’s peninsula, authorities in the Carolinas are warning residents to take caution. However, the reinvigorated Ian is not expected to bring the same level of destruction as it continues moving north.
Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist specializing in Atlantic Ocean hurricanes at Colorado State University, posted a forecast image to Twitter showing Ian now north of Florida and expected to become the first hurricane to make landfall in South Carolina since Matthew in 2016.
