House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday condemned former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago dinner last week with white supremacist Nick Fuentes and disgraced anti-Jewish rapper Kanye West.
“I don’t think anybody should be spending any time with Nick Fuentes,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) told reporters on the White House driveway. “He has no place in this Republican party. I think President Trump came out four times and condemned him, and didn’t know who he was.”
“The president had meetings with who he wants. I don’t think anybody, though, should have a meeting with Nick Fuentes,” McCarthy said later in the news conference after meeting with President Biden and other House and Senate leaders about lame-duck priorities before the next session of Congress begins Jan. 3.
“And his views should – are nowhere within the Republican Party and within this country itself,” he added.
A reporter then asked McCarthy, who is favored to become House speaker in January, about West’s own bigoted remarks.
“I think Kanye West should — and I don’t think those are right comments and I don’t think he should associate with them as well. I’m very clear in my position,” McCarthy said.
Trump, 76, hosted Fuentes, 24, and West, 45, at his Florida resort last week — and claimed Friday amid the ensuing uproar that he “knew nothing about” the notorious white nationalist.
