The women’s NCAA Tournament has reached the Sweet 16, and two No. 1 seeds are noticeably absent.
But defending champion South Carolina remains.
The undefeated Gamecocks won each of their first two tournament games by 30-plus points and continue their bid to become the first team to win back-to-back championships since Connecticut won four in a row from 2013-16. South Carolina, under coach Dawn Staley, won its first championship in 2017.
But gone are Stanford and Indiana, both losing in the second round. The Cardinal, who were seeking their second title in three years, lost to No. 8 seed Ole Miss, 54-49. The Hoosiers, which were a No. 1 seed for the first time in program history, lost 70-68 to No. 9 seed Miami when Destiny Harden made a game-winning jump shot with 3 seconds left.
Virginia Tech joins South Carolina as the only other top seed still remaining, and the Hokies will be looking to cut down the nets for the first time at the national championship in Dallas.
