Kimberly Cheatle was unable to explain how the gunman got onto the rooftop from where he opened fire on the former president, the senator said.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was unable to answer an important question about the gunman who opened fire on former president Donald Trump, according to Senator Ted Cruz.
The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, shot at Trump from a rooftop near a rally where he was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. One rallygoer was killed and two others were seriously wounded before Crooks was fatally shot by the Secret Service. Trump suffered an ear injury, but avoided being seriously hurt.
In the days since, the Secret Service has faced scrutiny about how it allowed a gunman to get so close to Trump. Multiple investigations are underway, both into the shooting and how law enforcement allowed it to occur.
Calls for Cheatle to resign have intensified, with Republican leaders from both the House and the Senate saying she should step down.
