Support for President Donald Trump’s plans to end birthright citizenship has dropped among Republicans in recent months, a new poll showed.
In February, a majority of Republican voters, 56 percent, were in favor of ending the Constitutional right, the NPR/Ipsos poll showed. That has now fallen to less than half, at 48 percent.
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution reads:»All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.»Why It Matters
Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office, aiming to limit birthright citizenship, a 14th Amendment right, to those whose parents are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents.
The order immediately sparked a flurry of lawsuits and multiple courts, including in Massachusetts, Maryland and Washington, issued injunctions to block it. Now the U.S. Supreme Court is examining whether lower courts have the ability to issue universal injunctions against the federal government.What To Know
The majority of Americans, 53 percent, still oppose ending birthright citizenship, compared to 54 percent in February. About 28 percent support the move while 17 percent say they don’t know.
While favor among Republican voters has softened, falling to a minority in May, Democrats’ opinions have been largely unchanged since earlier this year, with just 11 percent in favor and 79 percent against.
Just under half of Americans also support granting legal status to immigrants brought to the U.
