President Donald Trump announced Thursday morning that Mexico will receive a 90-day extension to negotiate a trade deal with the U.S.
Following what he called a “very successful” phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump said Mexico will have more time to reach an agreement before a 30% tariff rate kicks in. The president had set an Aug. 1 deadline for countries to negotiate a deal with the U.S. before increased “Liberation Day” tariff rates, first unveiled in April, took effect.
“ We have agreed to extend, for a 90 Day period, the exact same Deal as we had for the last short period of time, namely, that Mexico will continue to pay a 25% Fentanyl Tariff, 25% Tariff on Cars, and 50% Tariff on Steel, Aluminum, and Copper,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
