Minneapolis: Hundreds of people in the US have died in shootings over the past 25 years in offices, stores, theatres and other places, but the carnage perhaps hits hardest when it happens in schools and colleges where children and young adults are often the victims.
In some cases, the victims are children who still have some of their baby teeth. Others are newly adult students with career and family dreams, and teachers or religious leaders who frequently become role models and mentors to their young students.
Wednesday’s mass shooting at a church where Catholic school students were attending Mass in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the latest in a long list of attacks targeting students since the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Colorado.
Antioch High School, January 2025, 2 dead
The 17-year-old shooter who was a student at the Tennessee high school killed one student and injured one other before fatally shooting himself with a handgun.
University of New Mexico, July 2025, 1 dead
An 18-year-old man was taken into custody after a shooting at the University of New Mexico dormitory killed a 14-year-old boy, wounded a 19-year-old and prompted the evacuation of hundreds of students.
Florida State University, April 2025, 2 dead
The 20-year-old son of a sheriff’s deputy opened fire at Florida State University with his mother’s former service weapon, killing two men and wounding at least six others. The shooter is set to go to trial in November.
Abundant Life Christian School, December 2024, 2 dead
A 15-year-old female student killed another teenager and a teacher inside a nondenominational Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, just a week before the start of its Christmas break, police said. She also wounded six others and died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Apalachee High School, September 2024, 4 dead
A 14-year-old student opened fire inside a Winder, Georgia, high school with an assault-style rifle, killing two other 14-year-old students and two teachers, authorities said. Students scrambled for shelter in classrooms — and eventually fled to the football stadium — as officers swarmed the campus. The shooter surrendered and has been charged with murder. So has his father, who is accused of knowingly allowing his son to have the weapon.
Perry High School, January 2024, 2 dead
A 17-year-old opened fire at a high school in Perry, Iowa, just before classes on the first day after winter break, killing a sixth-grader and wounding the school principal, who risked his life to save students and later died of his injuries.
