President Trump on Saturday tweeted that he hoped for a «truly wonderful result» to come out of his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after leaving the Group of Seven (G-7) summit in Canada early for Singapore, where the meeting is expected to take place.
In his tweet, Trump seemed to suggest that Kim would have one chance to prove his seriousness about denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, implying that North Korea has a «one-time opportunity» to seek peace with the United States.
«I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World. It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before, create peace and great prosperity for his land. I look forward to meeting him and have a feeling that this one-time opportunity will not be wasted!» the president tweeted.
Trump is expected to meet with Kim, the first such meeting between a sitting U. S. president and a North Korean leader, on Tuesday at the luxury Capella Hotel.
His tweets come hours after the president told reporters at the G-7 summit that he would know within the first minute of meeting Kim whether the North Korean leader is serious about reaching a deal with the United States.
«I think within the first minute, I’ll know,» Trump said, prompting a reporter to question how he would know. «My touch. My feel. That’s what I do,» Trump continued. «You know, the way they say that you know if you’re going to like somebody in the first five seconds, you ever hear that one?»
But, Trump cautioned, Kim will «never have that opportunity again,» if he decides not to bend on denuclearization.
Though Trump expressed confidence on Saturday in his upcoming meeting with Kim, he reinforced that he would «see what happens.»
During a press conference this week, Trump also suggested that he could invite Kim to the U. S. if the June 12 summit goes well.
«Well, the answer is yes… But certainly if it goes well,» Trump told reporters during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. «I think it would be well received and I think [Kim] would look at it very favorably. So, I think that could happen.»
