The new Apple Watch Series 4 brings a lot of changes in design and improvements when it comes to the hardware, but that doesn’t mean Samsung has not been keeping a check on its wearables. Apple and Samsung have a different approach towards the design and display of its smartwatches. Having a squarish shape, Apple Watch Series 4 features an LTPO OLED Retina screen with a 324 x 394 resolution for the 40mm version and a 368 x 448 resolution for the 44mm variant.
It also has a small, thin digital crown for navigation purposes and it supports Force Touch. As for the Galaxy Watch, the 42mm version sports a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 360 x 360 resolution around a circular watch face with smooth rotating edges. The 46mm model bears a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED panel with the same resolution, with both versions featuring the Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ protection.
Having a new S4 dual-core 64-bit-capable chipset, Apple claims that its latest wearable family can deliver twice the performance compared to the Apple Watch Series 3 and it features 16GB of internal storage space. The Apple Watch Series 4 also sports LTE connectivity so you will not need to pair it with your iPhone if you want to receive notifications seamlessly.
As for the Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE variant, it features 1.5GB RAM, along with 4GB internal memory while the Bluetooth only version gets 768MB RAM + 4GB onboard memory. Both variants of the smartwatch run a custom application dual-core Exynos 9110 chipset who’s processor is running at a clock speed of 1.15GHz. The Apple Watch Series 4 also features an ECG sensor, which can be an important addition for older-generation users.
Both the Apple Watch Series 4 and Samsung Galaxy Watch get support for cellular connectivity, but there are still a lot of differences in the features segment. The Galaxy Watch also serves as an effective fitness tracker, as it is able to auto-detect various activities like walking, running, and even swimming. As an added bonus, the Galaxy Watch can be used to control your SmartThings devices and with Samsung Pay.
As for Apple Watch Series 4, it gets all of the sensors that you’d find in the Galaxy Watch except for SmartThings and Samsung Pay integration. However, the new accelerometer has ‘fall detection’, so it can tell if you have taken an accidental tumble and it can even call 911 automatically if you are inactive up to a minute after you have taken that fall.
As mentioned above, the Apple Watch Series 4 features an ECG, and it has been certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). What it does is it will give your heart a rhythm classification after placing a finger onto the flat surface of the digital crown for 30 seconds. Both wearables are also water-resistant up to 50 meters and the Apple Watch Series 4 features the ability to alert you to an abnormal heartbeat, which is something the Galaxy Watch does not harbour, unfortunately.
Apple Watch Series 4 battery life has been rated to run up to 18 hours at a single charge. While Samsung’s Galaxy Watch models feature two different capacities in two variants. The 42mm one features a 270mAh unit while the 46mm one gets a much larger 472mAh.
