A representative of the publisher and developer Blizzard Entertainment hints that the action-RPG Diablo 3 will be receiving cross-play at some point in the future.
With Sony Interactive Entertainment having recently decided to start slowly with cross-play by having the feature in beta for Fortnite, many video game development companies are now in the position to decide whether or not it will be worthwhile to add cross-platform capabilities for their titles. One such firm is Blizzard Entertainment, as the publisher and developer could be allowing Diablo 3 to receive cross-platform play at some point in the future.
While discussing Blizzard’s plans for the company’s upcoming BlizzCon 2018 expo, an unnamed representative from the studio hinted that Diablo 3 cross-play is an inevitability that fans should expect to see. Although it hasn’t officially been confirmed as a feature just yet, the Blizzard Entertainment rep stated, “It’s a question of when, not if,” when it comes to cross-play for Diablo 3‘s myriad versions.
For those unaware, Diablo 3 is currently playable on six different platforms–Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, to be specific–and Blizzard is set to release its seventh iteration of the game for Nintendo Switch next month. With this being the case, once cross-play becomes enabled for the action-RPG, it would be interesting to see if the publisher and developer allows the feature to work across current-generation consoles and last-gen systems.
All things considered, we will simply have to wait and find out when Blizzard chooses to open the doors across all of Diablo 3‘s supported platforms, and whether or not the feature is going to be implemented in other existing properties and future titles from the studio. It’s worth noting that the popular publisher and developer currently has multiple projects in the works–some of which may benefit from receiving cross-play–so it’s safe to presume that even more information regarding those ventures will be announced during BlizzCon 2018.
Diablo 3 is available now for Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version launches on November 2,2018.
