“The Facebook outage affects major parts of India, while Instagram is still working in many of the states in the country”
Facebook users in many parts of the world are facing difficulties in accessing the popular social networking site as well as the photo sharing app Instagram. The two outages worst affects countries in Western Europe but users in India are also reporting that they are unable to access the two social media services. The problem seems to be affecting both the mobile apps and the desktop website, though some users in India claim that they are able to play videos in their Facebook news feed. The Instagram outage does not seem to be too widespread in India. However, both users and pages are unable to post status updates and images at the moment.
The Facebook outage is widespread, according to the map by DownDetector.com, a tool to see if an online service is facing problems. It shows that countries in western Europe are bearing the worst of the outage, followed by eastern US. Countries in South America and southern Asia — including India — are also shown as affected. As for Instagram, the same countries are affected but central and southern India are not affected by it though states in the north, east, and west may see the app not working properly.
The outage seemingly started around 6pm IST but complaints about it peaked at about 7pm IST. DownDetector has received complaints over the outage from thousands of users in the past hour. Upon trying to open a Story, some users claim they get the message, “Oops: Something went wrong. We’re working on getting it fixed as soon as we can.” Instagram complaints also number in the thousands though only a fraction of those against its parent company. Facebook has not made an official comment on the matter so far on either outages.
