Five children from a Louisiana church and two truck drivers — one from West Palm Beach — were among the seven people who died as a result of a fiery multi-vehicle crash Thursday near Gainesville.
The children who died ranged in age from 9 to 14, according to a news release from Florida Highway Patrol. They were on their way to Disney World.
Steve Holland, 59, was driving a semi-truck hauling a box van north on Interstate 75 at 3:40 p.m. Thursday, according to FHP. For unknown reasons, Holland’s truck went left into a Honda driven by Robyn Rattray, 41, of Gainesville, sending both vehicles into the center median and into the southbound lanes.
Holland’s truck struck the driver side of a southbound Chevrolet van carrying 12 people, three adults and nine children, from Louisiana.
