The 97th victim of the Hillsborough disaster died earlier this week from long-term injuries sustained in the 1989 tragedy. Andrew Devine, who died Tuesday at age 55, was honored Thursday by Liverpool Football Club, of which he’d been a lifelong fan, The Associated Press reports. “Our players and staff paid tribute to Andrew Devine this morning by observing a 97-second silence. You’ll Never Walk Alone, Andrew,” the club tweeted. Devine died of fatal aspiration pneumonia, to which trauma sustained in the disaster, left him predisposed and was found by the Liverpool coroner’s court to have been “unlawfully killed,” making him the 97th Hillsborough victim, ITV reports. Devine had been admitted to Royal Liverpool University Hospital on July 12, according to a record of inquest from a hearing Wednesday, the outlet reports. Britain’s most devastating sports disaster unfolded on April 15, 1989, when overcrowding at Hillsborough Stadium — where Liverpool and Nottingham were playing the FA Cup semifinal — resulted in a tragic crush, taking the lives of 94 fans.
