Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first Asian-led superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This action-packed chapter in the MCU, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, follows the titular hero as he is forced to confront his father Wenwu. Liu’s character escaped his father’s clutches as a teen and ran to the United States to make a new life for himself, changing his name from Shang-Chi to Shaun. Ten years later he learns his sister Xialing is in danger from Wenwu and decides to travel to Macao to find her, with best friend Katy joining him. Katy is portrayed by Awkwafina, the actor and rapper who won a Golden Globe for her lead role in comedy The Farewell and appeared in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8.
