The movie focuses on a group of high school kids in the 1950s. When a greaser named Danny (John Travolta) falls in love with a transfer student named Sandy (Olvia Newton-John) he attempts to win her over. Their up and down romance leads to plenty of memorable musical numbers, including Newton-John’s performance of the Oscar-nominated song «Hopelessly Devoted to You.»
«Grease» was a critical and box office success when it was released in 1978. The movie holds a «76% Certified Fresh» score on review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It was even selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry in 2020.
After the movie’s release, Travolta went on to star in films like «Urban Cowboy» and «Pulp Fiction.» Meanwhile, Newton-John found continued success with her music career, including her 1981 double platinum album Physical. Newton-John passed away at the age of 73 on August 8.
