At least 11 people were killed as Hurricane Beryl swept through the Caribbean Islands, and forecasters warn it could intensify again as it nears Texas.

Forecasters warn Tropical Storm Beryl could once again intensify into a Category 1 hurricane before it barrels toward Texas, likely bringing intense winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to an area that saw its last tropical storm just over a week ago.Key Facts

Beryl, the earliest Category 5 hurricane to form in the Atlantic, has since downgraded to a tropical storm after slamming Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters warn the storm, nearly 400 miles southeast of Texas, will bring an “increasing risk of damaging hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge” throughout the southern and central Texas coast, causing flash flooding and urban flooding Sunday through Wednesday.

A hurricane warning is in effect along the southern coast of Texas, along with a storm surge watch from Corpus Christi to Galveston and a hurricane watch offshore, with the National Weather Service cautioning residents to prepare for “significant” and “hazardous” winds, and potential damage to roofing, siding, awnings, sheds, garage doors, windows and mobile homes, along with uprooted trees and scattered power outages.
