The UK’s House of Commons has voted in favour of assisted dying in an historic first that could lead to people being granted the freedom to end their lives.
British lawmakers gave preliminary approval on Friday to a bill aimed at allowing terminally ill adults in England and Wales to end their lives with assistance. The proposed legislation, known as the on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill or simply the assisted dying bill, passed its first hurdle in Parliament following an intense and emotional debate.
This vote marks a critical step forward, signaling broad support in principle and paving the way for further parliamentary scrutiny. A similar attempt in 2015 failed at this initial stage.
The debate, which lasted hours, delved into deeply personal and ethical considerations, addressing topics such as faith, grief, crime, finances, and the law.
