Legal experts weighed in on President Joe Biden giving his son a pardon on tax fraud and firearm charges.
Hunter Biden gave an early signal that he believed he would ultimately be pardoned by President Joe Biden, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told Newsweek.
The president on Sunday pardoned his son, who earlier this year was convicted on firearm and pleaded guilty to tax fraud charges, writing that he believes Hunter was «treated differently» than other defendants and that the charges «came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.»
«No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong. There has been an effort to break Hunter—who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution», Biden said in a statement.
The pardon was met with mixed reactions from the legal community. Some argued it was justified because other defendants typically wouldn’t face the same scrutiny for those charges.
