Microsoft’s latest operating system is 2-years-old
Windows 10 was officially launched on July 29,2015 as one of the biggest overhauls of Microsoft’s desktop operating system, being offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users if the install was performed in the first 12 months after the unveiling.
According to third-party market share data, Windows 10 currently has a share of 26.8 percent, while Windows 7 continues to be the leader with 49.04 percent. Windows XP remains the third most-used desktop OS with 6.94 percent.
Microsoft has already released two major OS updates for Windows 10 since its July 2015 launch, namely the Anniversary Update and the Creators Update, plus a smaller one called November Update.
But at this point, the company is working on giving the final touches to the third major Windows 10 update called Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (or Redstone 3) , with the development team now running the final Bug Bash as part of the Windows Insider program to discover and address bugs.
Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is projected to be ready in September, as per Microsoft’s new approach that includes two releases every year. Most likely, the RTM will land as version 1709, with Microsoft using version numbers that indicate the compiling date – in this case 17 marks the year and 09 the month, so it’s September 2017.
Without a doubt, Windows 10 is improving, but unfortunately for Microsoft, the growth has more or less slowed down in the last few months, with Windows 7 remaining the undisputed leader of the desktop operating system.
Microsoft originally wanted to bring Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by the end of FY 2017, but the company itself admitted that it might not achieve this goal, saying that more time is needed to install the OS on so many devices.
It remains to be seen how longer it’ d take for Windows 10 to overtake Windows 7, but with another major update currently in the pipeline, it’ ll be harder not to update systems to the latest OS.
