Taiwanese brand Acer has rolled out the world’s first tablet to run on Google’s Chrome OS. Until now, the Chrome OS was only seen running on notebooks, convertibles, all-in-one PCs, as well as tiny desktops. Dubbed the Chromebook Tab 10, Acer’s new education tablet will go up against Apple’s entry-level iPad.
“The Acer Chromebook Tab 10 combines advances in hardware and application support to enable more meaningful learning for an even wider range of K-12 students,” said James Lin, General Manager, Commercial & Detachable Notebooks, IT Products Business at Acer. “ The new Acer Chromebook Tab 10 encourages students to discover new ways of understanding the world around them.”
The Chromebook Tab 10 has been priced at $329 (Rs.21,300 approx.) and is set to go on sale next month in the US. Acer will also be launching the tablet in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa in May. As of now, it doesn’t seem likely that the tablet will be making its way to the Indian market.
The Chromebook Tab 10 features a 9.7-inch sized in-touch IPS display with 2048 x 1536 QXGA resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 264 pixels per inch. Since it is a tablet designed for education, the tablet is bundled with a Wacom EMR stylus. The stylus doesn’t need to be charged and has a dedicated slot of its own, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note series. Powering the tablet is an OP1 chipset built by Rockchip, paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage. For further expansion, the tablet includes a microSD card slot.
In the camera department, the tablet comes equipped with a 5MP resolution camera on the back and a 2MP camera on the front. Connectivity wise, the tablet supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, a USB Type-C port, Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The tablet packs a 34Wh battery that is claimed to provide up to 9 hours of battery life. In terms of dimensions, the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 measures 172.2 x 238.2 x 9.98mm and weighs in at 550 grams.
In the future, Acer’s Chromebook Tab 10 will support augmented reality (AR) apps to help students experience new ways of learning.
