Microsoft has confirmed that an update for Red Dead Redemption available today will add native 4K graphics and textures for Xbox One X players worldwide.
On its Inside Xbox livestream, which covers all of Microsoft’s major backward compatibility news for Xbox One and Xbox One X, Microsoft has confirmed that 6 new Xbox 360 titles will be updated with native 4K graphics and textures for Xbox One X, available today.
One of the Xbox team members states on the stream, “[Microsoft] has a new set of enhanced games, also coming out, and they are launching today, including a new title [for the backward compatibility program].” The games listed include Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Red Dead Redemption, Darksiders, Gears of War 2, Portal 2, and Sonic Generations.
According to the team, the 4K updates will be available today for all Xbox One and Xbox One X players. For Red Dead Redemption specifically, the update is 582.73MB in size and will be grant native 4K graphics, meaning it will have 9x the pixel count that the original Xbox 360 version had.
This news comes in preparation for the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, which was delayed at the start of this year to October 2018. Little has been heard about the anticipated sequel since then; however, this update might be an indication of news to come, with fans trying to survive a drought of information about the title.
Sonic Generations is not just being enhanced for 4K usage on Xbox One X; it is also only just being brought to Microsoft’s backward compatibility program and is the first game to be compatible on Xbox One with 4K immediately available for all players. The presenters on the stream were shocked when it was announced that all of these updates and games would be available today for everyone to play immediately.
Interesting, fan response to the news was mixed. Most were happy and shocked that the updates were in native 4K as opposed to upscaled, while others were begging for Activision’s classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to be brought to the backward compatibility program. It’s something that fans have been wanting for a while, but might not happen due to the rumored Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered in the works.
Red Dead Redemption is available on PS3, PS Now, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
