The Tokyo metropolitan government aims to ban indoor smoking at all restaurants with employees in the Japanese capital, Governor Yuriko Koike said Friday.
The proposed regulations, designed to prevent passive smoking, are stricter than central government plans that allow smoking at restaurants smaller in size than set standards. Koike’s proposal will make some 84 pct of restaurants in Tokyo subject to the smoking ban, while exempting those with smoking rooms and those without employees.
