Bethesda posts a teasing message on social media after an online listing from retailer Walmart Canada appeared to leak RAGE 2 ahead of an E3 2018 announcement.
Earlier today, online listings from Walmart Canada leaked several games including Gears of War 5, Borderlands 3, and Just Cause 4. RAGE 2, a follow up to the first-person shooter and RPG published by Bethesda in 2011, was also on that list. As fans began to discuss what RAGE 2 may offer them, an official Twitter account weighed in on the rumors, appearing to poke fun at all the speculation.
Not long after the Walmart Canada listing began to do the rounds, @RAGEgame, which is the official, verified Twitter account associated with the first RAGE, published a critique of the leak. With bright pink, Comic Sans lettering in all caps, the RAGE Twitter account said that the Walmart listing has the “incorrect keyart,” the lettering uses the “wrong font,” is “not all caps,” and is also missing an age rating. Though despite all of this, the RAGE Twitter account gave Walmart Canada an “A” grade.
The tweet quickly picked up steam among fans of the original RAGE, in part because the Walmart tweet is now the only tweet on the RAGE Twitter account, suggesting that Bethesda is about to ramp up marketing efforts alongside an official RAGE 2 announcement. Bethesda also replied to the tweet with a succinct “Dude.” and Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines also got in on the fun.
Bethesda itself has previously teased RAGE 2, so a new game is not out of the question. In an interview published in 2016, Pete Hines suggested that Bethesda could release sequels to both RAGE and The Evil Within. It’s worth noting that The Evil Within 2 was released in 2017, just over a year after that interview took place, meaning that the game was in development when Hines made those teasing comments. It’s reasonable to think that RAGE 2 has been in development since that interview took place as well.
Unfortunately, the Walmart Canada leak didn’t offer any hints at what RAGE 2 may include. The first game was praised for its graphics, its brutal combat, and reviews even compared it to Borderlands. Borderlands 3 is also rumored to be announced soon and RAGE 2 would enter a games industry full of gritty RPGs, including Bethesda’s own Fallout 4. So it may be a challenge for the new game to stand out.
If the game is in the works, then there’s a chance that the game will be announced at E3 2018. Bethesda recently announced its E3 2018 plans and teased a “big mix” of games, so perhaps RAGE 2 is one such announcement that the publisher will make during the event.
