RIVERTON — A man with a knife was shot Monday night after allegedly approaching a car occupied by two teenagers, then getting in a confrontation with their father, according to police.
The shooting happened at 11638 S. Winford Drive at 10: 57 p.m., Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke said. Authorities encountered the homeowner with a handgun and Derrick Palmer, 36, who’d been shot, when they arrived.
Lohrke said Palmer was intoxicated when he left a friend’s house across the street, and Palmer took his pants off, pulled out a knife and approached a car with two teens in it.
The teens lived nearby and called their mother to open the garage door, Lohrke said. The teens safely ran inside to get away from Palmer, and Palmer still tried to gain entry to the home while holding a knife, according to police.
The father of the two teens confronted Palmer with his gun. Lohrke said Palmer refused to leave and was shot after a struggle between him and the father.
According to Lohrke, the father was compliant and put down the gun when police arrived, and Palmer stood up and started to go toward the gun. Officers secured the gun before Palmer could reach it. Palmer then tried to gain entry to the home again when officers used a Taser to stop him, Lohrke said.
Palmer was handcuffed and taken to the hospital in critical condition. His status was later upgraded to serious and stable.
