Reactive App Development Platform will be used with IBM’s cloud
IBM is working with Lightbend to build an integrated platform that – they say – will ‘help to advance the development of artificial intelligence and cognitive solutions in the enterprise.’ The results from this will provide a toolchain for Java and Scala developers to build and deploy these solutions in both on-premise and cloud environments.
IBM will integrate the capabilities of Lightbend’s Reactive Application Development Platform into its cloud platform and services: these include data analytics, cognitive and machine learning and collaborative data science tools. IBM’s chief digital officer, Bob Lord, said, “We believe the use of the Lightbend’s Reactive Platform is essential to building today’s modern infrastructures… Java and Scala are the languages of cognitive and AI development, and cognitive development is the future. The collaboration between IBM and Lightbend can help enterprise developers build cognitive applications and accelerate the era of cognitive computing.”
The companies say that this collaboration will create new code, tools and documentation that developers can use to build Java and Scala applications on the Lightbend Reactive Platform. Integration of Websphere and ‘key offerings’ across the IBM cloud are also forecast, such as the Watson Data Platform and app management services.
Mark Brewer, CEO of Lightbend, said, “Working with IBM on an integrated platform for cognitive development is a natural progression of our work to support advanced cognitive application development. As one of the leaders in cognitive/AI, IBM brings important code and tools to our customers and the Java and Scala communities… IBM’s support of Lightbend and the Reactive Platform is a validation of where we think cognitive development is going and what is required by the developers building that future.”
Some of IBM’s past work with developers includes the creation of the Eclipse platform and Eclipse Foundation, and an ongoing collaboration with Lightbend to train Scala developers.
