COURTLAND TOWNSHIP, MI — One person is in custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a woman and severely injured her twin sons.
Kent County Undersheriff Michelle Young confirmed that a person was taken into custody Saturday morning.
The crash happened about 8:20 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15 at the intersection of Ritchie Avenue NE and 15 Mile Road.
Police said Meranda Baguss was driving west on 15 Mile Road and had the right of way when a northbound pickup truck went through a stop sign.
After the crash, the pickup driver fled the scene on foot. Police used tracking dogs and a helicopter to try to find the person, but were not successful.
Early Saturday, police were able to track down a man.
“We got information that led us to his location,” Young said.
She declined to give further information about where the man was arrested or what information they used to find him.
Young said police are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash so they can determine what charges to seek.
A sheriff’s sergeant at the crash scene Friday indicated deputies found alcohol in the pickup and that the crash could be alcohol-related.
Baguss’s two children were last known to be in critical condition at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
