HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas has confirmed in a tweet that the company’s budget Nokia 3 smartphone will soon receive the first Android 8.0 Oreo beta update. He also confirmed that the entry-level Nokia 2 smartphone will be jumping straight to Android 8.1 Oreo to benefit from optimized memory support for devices with 1GB or lower RAM.
The Nokia 3 was launched with the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system out of the box in June last year and received the Android 7.1.1 update with the December security patch last month. It is now expected that HMD Global will skip Android 7.1.2 Nougat and jump straight to Android 8.0 Oreo for the Nokia 3. Even though HMD couldn’t quite keep its promise of updating the Nokia 3 to Android Oreo before the end of 2017, we should keep in mind that not many smartphone makers are rolling out the Oreo update for their budget smartphones from 2017. HMD has also impressed us by regularly rolling out the latest Android security patch updates for its entire smartphone lineup.
HMD’s current flagship, the Nokia 8, recently received the Android 8.1 Oreo beta update, making it one of the first non-Google smartphones to receive the latest Oreo Maintenance Release.
