Epic Games promised a 60 FPS mode for Fortnite on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and now that the mode has launched, a report has come in revealing that Fortnite 60 FPS Mode works on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as advertised.
The report comes from Digital Foundry who tested out the Fortnite 60 FPS Mode on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Usually, when a 60 FPS mode for a console game is launched, it only unlocks the frame rate and the game doesn’t always hit a 60 FPS mark but, that is not the case with Fortnite 60 FPS Mode.
According to Digital Foundry, Epic Games achieved the 60 FPS for Fortnite on consoles by optimizing the game’s CPU usage and performance. Not only that, Epic also made changes to visual presentation in order to hit the 60 FPS target on consoles.
However, 60 FPS for Fortnite comes at the cost of the game’s resolution as Dynamic resolution scaling comes into play when a lot of things start to happen on screen.
According to the report, on Xbox One the resolution jumps between 900p and 600p while Xbox One X resolution jumps between 1152p and 1728p while 792p on Xbox One and 1440p on Xbox One X being common resolutions.
On the other hand, Fortnite on PS4 maxes out at 1080p but drops at 756p when required. For PS4 Pro, it also hits the 1080p mark but drops to 900p when things get hectic on screen.
Resolution is not the only compromise made for Fortnite 60 FPS Mode as graphical features such as Shadow quality and motion blur have also been reduced to make the game run at 60 FPS except for PS4 Pro.
This raises the question as to why Epic Games made the graphical compromise on Xbox One X as these graphical compromises weren’t made for PS4 Pro. Hopefully, Epic Games will fix it with a future patch. Also, players will have the 30 FPS option if they can’t stand the compromises.
