The Fast and Furious franchise is shifting gears to become an animated television series for Netflix in the coming years. However, unlike the live-action installments, the upcoming take will center around Tony Toretto, the teenage cousin of Dom Toretto.
The setting, though, will remain the same. The central characters will find themselves following the same footsteps (via Variety) as they are recruited by a government agency to fight crime by infiltrating an elite racing league known to be serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization.
“We are excited to extend and expand our successful relationship with Netflix by not only delivering more high-quality DreamWorks programming, but connecting fans of Universal films with fascinating new stories,” said Margie Cohn, president of DreamWorks Animation Television. “Our new home at Universal marks an exciting new chapter for storytelling at our studio, and Fast & Furious is only the beginning.”
The upcoming Fast and Furious animated series will have Tim Hedrick (Voltron: Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (The Penguins of Madagascar) serving as both executive producers and showrunners. Vin Diesel, Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan will serve as executive producers as well; all of whom serve as producers on the live-action installments in the franchise.
There have been eight live-action releases under the Fast and Furious banner to date that have collectively earned more than $5 billion in the worldwide box office. The franchise does not seem to be bothered with fatigue because there are three more installments on the way.
The ninth and tenth chapters will be released in 2020 and 2021 respectively. They were delayed by a year in order to make room for Hobbs and Shaw in 2019, which is a spinoff adaptation on the franchise.
The Fast and Furious animated television series remains without a release date for the time being.
