Here is everything we have heard so far about the Google Pixel 5.
Why you can trust Pocket-lint (Pocket-lint) – Google’s Pixel 4a was finally revealed on 3 August after months of speculation but that’s not the last we will be seeing from Google and its smartphone offering this year. The company teased a 5G version of the Pixel 4a and the Pixel 5, both of which are due to be announced on 30 September. You can read everything we know so far about the Google Pixel 4a 5G in our separate feature, but this feature focuses on everything we have heard so far about the Pixel 5. Release date and price30 September announcement15 October potential availability€629 price suggested9 countries confirmed Previous Pixel models have been revealed at the October hardware event, and Google has scheduled a ‚Launch Night In‘ on 30 September where the Pixel 5 is expected to launch. Rumours have long been suggesting that the Pixel 5 will be more affordable than previous Pixel devices and a recent leak has suggested a price of €629, which might come in at around £550 or $700. We’ve now seen this from several sources, including Google Japan. Thanks to a retailer leak, we also have an availability date of 15 October, which would fit the timescale. Google has said the Pixel 5 would be available in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Australia when it launches.1/3Evan Blass Pixel 5 designSquare camera housingBrushed aluminiumPunch hole cameraIP68 Google itself teased snippets of the Pixel 4 months before it was announced but so far, the company has only shown the Pixel 5 off from the side. It looks like there is a brushed aluminium frame and a camera housing in the top left corner of the rear, like the Pixel 4. OnLeaks and Pricebaba created some renders showing this design, along with a punch hole camera in the top left corner of the display – matching the Pixel 4a. There’s also a physical fingerprint sensor on the rear, which can also be seen in some real life images leaked too, as well as images leaked by Evan Blass. Previous to the official tease from Google, David Kowalski leaked a design on Twitter, which also shows a physical fingerprint sensor on the rear and a dual rear camera. Kowalski, OnLeaks, Evan Blass and the real life images support Google’s image, though the official image only shows the side of the Pixel 5, so doesn’t confirm the physical fingerprint sensor. An eariler leak from Front Page Tech’s YouTube channel claimed the Pixel 5 will have a matt glass finish on the rear like the Pixel 4. As mentioned, the Google tease shows an aluminium body, certainly the edges – so it’s not yet clear exactly what the back might offer – but it’s looking more and more likely that it will be aluminium. It’s said to come in black and green colours, both of which have been fully leaked by Evan Blass. Display 6.0-inch OLED, Full HD+90Hz refresh rate The Pixel 4 has a 5.7-inch display, while the Pixel 4 XL has a 6.3-inch display. It looks like there might only be one size of Pixel 5, this time coming with a 6-inch display, so it’s quite a compact device. This display is said to have a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels (429ppi), use an OLED panel with a 19.5:9 aspect and support HDR. It also looks as though Google is sticking to the 90Hz refresh rate that appeared on the Pixel 4 models. There will also be a punch hole for the front camera.1/4OnLeaks / Pricebaba Pixel 5 cameras Dual rear cameras suggestedNight Sight New features In terms of camera specifications, it’s claimed there will be a 16-megapixel 0.5x ultra-wide angle lens, f/2.2, and a 12.2-megapixel lens, f/1.7, on the back like the Pixel 4. The shift away from the zoom is surprising, if this turns out to be true. There’s said to be an 8-megapixel, f/2.0, fixed focus front camera. We’d expect Google to continue offering features like Night Sight and the ability to capture the stars, with more improvements and features likely to appear on the Pixel 5. A decoding of the new Google Camera app suggested a feature codenamed Lasagna would appear on the Pixel 5 – said to be a blur effect, along with audio zoom to video, the addition of quick sharing to video and adding flash adjustment to the camera.
