Ten films that define the era of 9/11 cinema.
It has been 20 years since America was attacked by al Qaeda on September 11th,2001. The aftermath of those coordinated attacks and the loss of nearly 3,000 lives during the attacks has been two decades of war, social upheaval, and a scar on the soul of our nation. This weekend, there are 10 must-see films I urge you to watch for the anniversary of 9/11. It’s hard to look this thing in the eye, to not just recall it but to truly understand the enormity of what happened and what it did to people that day and every day since. It’s also hard to look at how we responded to the attacks and what it did to our enemies, what it did to the huge number of innocent people who suffered and died as we exacted revenge, and what it did to ourselves. But look we must. So I’ve compiled a list of films depicting the real events from real people’s perspectives on that day, true stories about the human experience, both tragic and redemptive, both mournful and uplifting. Some take political positions, others don’t. Before I get to the list of films, I’d like to also mention a TV show and four documentaries to include in your viewing as well.
