Suspect in killing UnitedHealthcare CEO rants outside courthouse

The suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO struggled with deputies and shouted Tuesday while arriving for a court appearance in Pennsylvania, a day after he was arrested at a McDonald’s and charged with murder.
Luigi Nicholas Mangione emerged from a patrol car, spun toward reporters and shouted something partly unintelligible referring to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people” while deputies pushed him inside.
Prosecutors were beginning to take steps to bring Mangione back to New York to face a murder charge while new details emerged about his life and how he was captured. The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family was charged with murder hours after he was arrested in the Manhattan killing of Brian Thompson, who led the United States’ largest medical insurance company.
At the brief hearing, defense lawyer Thomas Dickey informed the court that Mangione would not waive extradition to New York but instead wants a hearing on the issue. He has 14 days to challenge detention.
Mangione, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion but was quieted by his lawyer.
Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed, a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said.
He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of his hand-written notes and social media posts.
Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, according to police bulletin.
Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors have obtained an arrest warrant, a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania.
Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania — about 230 miles (about 370 kilometers) west of New York City — after a McDonald’s customer recognized him and notified an employee, authorities said.
Officers found him sitting at a back table, wearing a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop, according to a Pennsylvania police criminal complaint.
He initially gave them a fake ID, but when an officer asked Mangione whether he’d been to New York recently, he “became quiet and started to shake,” the complaint says.
When he pulled his mask down at officers’ request, “we knew that was our guy,” rookie Officer Tyler Frye said.
Images of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and beanie. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was carrying a gun like the one used to kill Thompson and the same fake ID the shooter had used to check into a New York hostel, along with a passport and other fraudulent IDs.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione also had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America.”
A law enforcement official who wasn’t authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said the document included a line in which Mangione claimed to have acted alone.
“To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” the document said, according to the official.
It also had a line that said, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.”
Pennsylvania prosecutor Peter Weeks said in court that Mangione was found with a passport and $10,000 in cash, $2,000 of it in foreign currency. Mangione disputed the amount.
Thompson, 50, was killed Wednesday as he walked alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. Police quickly came to see the shooting as a targeted attack by a gunman who appeared to wait for Thompson, came up behind him and fired a 9 mm pistol.
Investigators have said “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were written on ammunition found near Thompson’s body. The words mimic “delay, deny, defend,” a phrase used to criticize the insurance industry.
From surveillance video, New York investigators determined the shooter quickly fled fled the city, likely by bus.
A grandson of a wealthy, self-made real estate developer and philanthropist, Mangione is a cousin of a current Maryland state legislator.
Valedictorian at his elite Baltimore prep school, he went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said.
“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Maryland Del. Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
From January to June 2022, Luigi Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Honolulu.
Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder R.J. Martin.
“Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Ryan said. “There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.”
At Surfbreak, Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said.
“He went surfing with R.J. once but it didn’t work out because of his back,” Ryan said, but noted that Mangione and Martin often went together to a rock-climbing gym.
Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment.
Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago. —AP

NBA Cup: these are the first semifinalists who booked their tickets to Las Vegas

0

Milwaukee and Oklahoma are confirmed for the semifinals of the second NBA Cup.
The second edition of NBA Cup will have its final phase this weekend in Las Vegas. And the four remaining teams have been decided, after the quarterfinales played last night.
This is young competition, created last year, that still divides many fans and franchises about its importance: all games, except for the final, are integrated within the regular season, so it doesn’t really feel like an event.
And let’s not forget that this was created solely thinking on viewership ratings: most Americans prefere to watch the end of NFL season this time of the year.
However, once you reach the quarterfinals, all teams want to add another trophy to their record book. And the winners last year, Los Angeles Lakers, didn’t even reach the knockout phase this time.
Not too surprising results, as Thunders are leading the West Conference on the regular season of NBA -this victory counts for that- despite Dallas Mavericks being also one of the strongest, with Luka Dončić that didn’t find his best form.
Then, Milwaekue Bucks are the only team the repeat as a semifinalists: neither Thunder or any of the teams playing today were in the semifinals last year. This proves that, despite not many people caring too much, NBA Cup is a good chance to see a wider diversity of franchises lifting trophies.
The two remaining teams will play their games tonight: New York Knicks vs. Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Rockets vs. Golden State Warriors.
The four semifinalist will go to Las Vegas to play the semifinals (December 14) and the final (December 17). All those games are played on neutral courts.

China property: lived-in home sales rise but prices fall in Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai

0

Too early to conclude China’s real estate sector has bottomed out, Nomura’s chief China economist Lu Ting says.
Lived-in home sales in some of China’s largest cities are picking up, but prices remain subdued, with Japanese investment bank Nomura noting that the property crisis weighing on the economy for nearly four years is far from over.
In Shenzhen, a total of 2,390 second-hand homes changed hands last week, the most in more than three years, according to data compiled by the Shenzhen Real Estate Intermediary Association.
Similar trends have been observed in other major cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, where second-hand home transactions have increased in recent months.
However, lived-in home prices are a different story. In Shenzhen, prices have fallen by about 7 per cent in the first 11 months of the year, according to a price index from Centaline Property. The declines have been greater in Shanghai at about 10 per cent and more than 12 per cent in Beijing. At the same time, new home sales continue to decline.
“I think it’s a bit too early to conclude that China’s real estate sector as a whole has bottomed out and begun to rebound,” Lu Ting, chief China economist at Nomura, said on Wednesday.

This Linux distro is so Windows-like, it even comes with Microsoft apps

Wubuntu is ready to help you transition if you’re debating whether to try Linux but are afraid it’s too different to Windows.
One of the many wonderful things about Linux is that you can make it look how you want. If you want to go crazy and create a desktop that looks and feels unlike any other, you can. But there are also distributions for people who’d rather have a user-friendly and instantly familiar desktop environment.
Wubuntu is one such distribution, and I’m sure you can figure out what operating system it mimics. Yes, the correct response is Windows 11.
I’ve tested plenty of Linux distributions that attempt to copy the look and feel of Microsoft’s OS, and none of them get nearly as close as Wubuntu. Upon installing Wubuntu, I was surprised at how much it resembled Windows 11 — down to the inclusion of Microsoft’s AI, Copilot, and Microsoft Edge.
The only thing Wubuntu is missing is those pesky ads in the menu.
As you probably expect, Wubuntu is based on Ubuntu and uses the KDE Plasma desktop to achieve a strong appropriation of Windows 11. On the panel, you’ll find a weather app, a sidebar, a desktop menu, a run command launcher, favorites, a system tray, and Copilot. Upon first login, you’ll be greeted with the Settings window, where you can select your theme and adjust a few other aesthetics.
As usual, KDE Plasma is a highly configurable desktop environment.
Dig a bit deeper, and you’ll find things like Microsoft PowerShell and quick links to Office 365 apps, each of which opens in Edge. For those who’d rather keep their document creation/management locally (or in the cloud), the OnlyOffice Desktop Editors is installed.
Wubuntu also includes tools to interact with your Android devices, Active Directory support, a driver manager, Google Chrome, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Steam, Thunderbird, VLC media player, Webcamoid, Wine/Winetricks, and Flatpak (so you can easily install even more software).
Aside from the collection of pre-installed software, what’s most impressive is how well the developers have copied the look and feel of Windows 11. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still not a fan of the Microsoft operating system, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be impressed with the amount of work that went into creating this distribution. And the more you dig into Wubuntu, the more little details you’ll find — especially if you’ve been using Windows 11 for some time.
As Wubuntu is based on Ubuntu, you know you’re getting high levels of user-friendliness and outstanding hardware support. The only downside is that Wubuntu ships with kernel 6.8.0-48, which means you’re not getting the added hardware support from the latest kernel release. Even so, unless you’re running the latest hardware, kernel 6.8 will do a great job detecting and supporting your computer’s technology.
If you’re a fan of Copilot, there’s an icon just for you at the bottom right of the desktop. You’ll have to log in with your Microsoft account when you launch the app. Once you’ve successfully logged in, Copilot will be available to help you.
Click the icon at the bottom-right corner of the desktop and Copilot appears, ready to answer your questions.
Although I’m not a fan of Windows 11, I am a big fan of Ubuntu and KDE Plasma. I believe Ubuntu is the most user-friendly operating system available, and Plasma is one of the finest desktop environments on the market (no matter the OS).
When you combine those two factors, you already have a brilliant desktop operating system. To add a distinctly Windows 11 look and feel into the mix, you wind up with a Linux distribution that is sure to please several user types, such as:
Ultimately, Wubuntu is incredibly easy to use and about as flexible as an operating system can be. You get the power and stability of Linux, some rather important Windows tools, and the inclusion of Flatpak, Wine, and Steam to greatly expand the number of software titles at your fingertips.
Wubuntu is the most Microsoft-esque Linux distribution I’ve ever tested, and should go a long way toward pleasing users looking to migrate from Windows but who fear change. If that sounds like you, give this Linux distribution a try.

Joe Rogan blasts ‘dirty’ healthcare insurance industry after CEO Brian Thompson’s murder: ‘It’s f–king gross’

Podcaster Joe Rogan suggested the public’s lack of sympathy over UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s assassination is because of the “dirty business” he was involved in.
Mega podcaster Joe Rogan suggested the public’s lack of sympathy over UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s assassination is because of the “dirty business” he was involved in.
Rogan, 57, was speaking with filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and producer Roger Avary on Tuesday’s episode of the “Joe Rogan Experience” when they briefly kicked off the show by discussing a photo of accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione.
“I don’t think this guy was a professional,” Rogan said in the episode recorded about a week before alleged assassin Mangione was captured at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., on Monday following a five-day manhunt.
“I think this guy, if I had to guess, was some guy who got f–ked over,” the UFC commentator said. “Apparently, that company is really bad at denying claims.”
Avary and Rogan then pointed out the staggering denial rate for health insurance claims UnitedHealthcare is accused of having with its policyholders.
“I don’t think anybody is, like, going to be crying too hard over [Thompson],” Avary said.
“Maybe his family, but that’s about it,” Rogan replied.
“It’s a dirty, dirty business. The business of insurance is f–king gross. It’s gross. Especially healthcare insurance. It’s f–king gross.”
Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Thompson as the 50-year-old CEO walked to a Manhattan hotel where UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, was holding its annual investor conference.
He was reported missing by his prominent Maryland real estate family last month after he lost touch with them following a recent back surgery.
The brilliant 26-year-old University of Pennsylvania grad was found carrying a ghost gun, masks, a US passport, and rambling writings linking him to the ambush when he was arrested at the Pennsylvania McDonald’s following a five-day manhunt.
He was charged with murder in New York Monday evening after Pennsylvania authorities issued charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and providing false identification to police earlier in the day.
Law enforcement is investigating a three-page manifesto-type document that Mangione had on him.
The alleged manifesto included raging remarks about “parasitic” health insurance companies and expressed disdain for corporate greed and power.
The Ivy League graduate allegedly also wrote that the US has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not.
The hand-written document allegedly found with Mangione included a line in which he claimed to have acted alone.
“To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” the document said, according to sources.
The details emerged as cops continued to piece together a possible motive for the cold-blooded killing – including whether a vendetta against the medical industry fueled Mangione after suffering from chronic back pain.
Mangione is being held in a Pennsylvania lockup while fighting extradition to New York.
