LONDON (AP) – Actor Ian McKellen has apologized for remarks in which he appeared to suggest that allegations of sexual abuse that have been leveled against Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer resulted from the entertainers’ unease with their own sexuality.
McKellen tweeted Saturday that comments made during the live #QueerAF podcast were “clumsily expressed.” He said “I suggested that if closeted people were instead open about their sexuality they wouldn’t abuse others. That, of course, is wrong.”
He went on to say that he “would never, ever trivialize or condone abuse of any kind. I deeply regret my careless remarks and apologise unreservedly for any distress I caused.”
Both Spacey and Singer have denied wrongdoing in relation to the allegations.

Car hits pedestrians and bicyclists in New Orleans, killing two people

A car plowed into bicyclists and pedestrians on several blocks of a street in New Orleans, killing two people and leaving six others injured as the city celebrates Mardi Gras festivities, authorities said.
« We were able to apprehend the subject so quickly because citizens stopped this individual, because they thought they were helping someone who had just been involved in a one-car accident, » Ferguson said.
Officers determined that the accident scene spanned several blocks of Esplanade Avenue. Authorities are investigating whether the driver was intoxicated, and standard protocol involves breathalyzer and blood tests, Ferguson said.
Police did not provide details on the people killed or injured. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release the victims’ identities after autopsies are completed and family members notified.
While no motive is currently known, the incident does not appear connected to the Endymion parade, a Mardi Gras-related activity that was happening nearby, Ferguson said.
The crash comes about two years after a drunken driver rammed into a crowd taking part in the Endymion parade, injuring at least 28 people. The driver in that 2017 crash, Neilson Rizzuto, was charged with vehicular negligence resulting in injury, and reckless operation and hit-and-run driving.
The Endymion parade is one of the most popular events leading up to Mardi Gras, which is Tuesday. Mardi Gras, French for « Fat Tuesday, » is a day of revelry that includes parades, parties and food before the Christian fasting season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It marks the last day of the Carnival season.

Google’s Project Zero team is well-known for its knack of finding security flaws in the company’s own products as well as those manufactured by other firms. Its members locate flaws in software, privately report them to the manufacturers, and give them 90 days to resolve the problem before publicly disclosing it.
Last year, the team revealed vulnerabilities in Windows 10 S and Microsoft Edge. Now, it has exposed a « high severity » flaw in macOS’ kernel.
A security researcher from Google’s Project Zero has discovered that even though macOS’ kernel, XNU, allows copy-on-write (COW) behavior in some cases, it is essential that any copied memory is not available for modifications from the source process. While COW is a resource-management technique that is not inherently flawed, it appears that Apple’s implementation of it certainly is.
Project Zero has found out that if a user-owned mounted filesystem image is modified, the virtual management subsystem is not informed of the changes, which means that an attacker can take potentially take malicious actions without the mounted filesystem knowing about it. The detailed explanation can be found below:
The researcher informed Apple about the flaw back in November 2018, but the company is yet to fix it even after exceeding the 90-day deadline, which is why the bug is now being made public with a « high severity » label. That said, Apple has accepted the problem and is working with Project Zero on a patch for a future macOS release. You can also view the proof-of-concept code that demonstrates the problem on the dedicated webpage here.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A new photo of an Iranian opposition leader and his activist wife who have been held under house arrest for eight years is spreading on social media in the country.
The Twitter account of the reformist Etemad daily published the image early on Sunday of Mir Hossein Mousavi and his wife, Zahra Rahnavard, without a story. The photo was not published in the paper’s Sunday edition.
Authorities have banned media from publishing their images after they were put under house arrest in 2011. Mousavi emerged as opposition leader during Iran’s disputed 2009 presidential election.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, already under fire by hard-liners for his unraveling nuclear deal, faces criticism from reformists over failing to free the two as he had pledged during his election campaigns in 2013 and 2017.

College teams add more glitz in attempt to keep fans coming

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — College basketball teams are trying to get fans to keep coming to games in the age of smartphones by making those phones an integral part of the experience.
That’s evident every time cellphones in the stands light up arenas across the country during pregame lineup introductions.
Over 20 schools subscribe to a service enabling fans to have their phones light up in sync with music playing during pregame festivities. The program, organized by a company called Cue Audio, adds glitz to lineup introductions at various arenas from Oregon to Georgia.
« The light show’s pretty cool, » Tennessee guard Admiral Schofield said. « Especially when we have sold-out games, I think for the opposing team, you really see how many people are in the building, just by the cellphones. It brings a different intensity to the game. »
The success of the Cue Audio project shows the variety of ways colleges are trying to assure fans keep coming to games when HD television makes it tempting to stay home instead.
Football Bowl Subdivision attendance has dipped every season from 2014-17 (2018 figures haven’t been released yet). The same concerns exist in basketball.
The average attendance for a Division I basketball game last year was 4,807, a slight increase from the 2017 total of 4,799. Attendance rose 4.9 percent in the Southeastern Conference and 3.6 percent in the Big East, but dropped 5.2 percent in the Pac-12 and 4.3 percent in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while holding steady in the Big Ten and Big 12.
« One of the challenges we have nowadays with getting fans to invest in purchasing tickets and actually using them is to try to create moments you can’t necessarily get at home from your couch or wherever you are watching on your phone, » Virginia Tech assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions Lauren Belisle said. « Anything we can do to make fans feel when they’re in the building that they’re impacting the game and part of the whole experience is big for us. »
Arizona State has added a disc jockey. North Carolina installed four new video boards at a cost of just over $5 million. Nebraska has a contest in which a blindfolded student gets on his or her knees to search for a pile of cash on the court.
North Carolina assistant athletic director for marketing Michael Beale says the aim is to make sure spectators experience something they couldn’t see just as easily on television.
« What we’re doing now, we don’t put our team entrance video out on social media or out for people to see, » Beale said. « If you want to see the entrance video, you need to be in the Smith Center. »
And it’s those pregame entrances that exemplify the steps being taken to get fans into their seats as early as possible.
Cue Audio co-founder Ira Akers says the company’s idea of lighting up arenas with cellphones started out with a minor league hockey team in Nebraska. They eventually started marketing it to colleges.
Akers declined to offer pricing information, but Tennessee associate athletic director Jimmy Delaney said the school got a season pass for its men’s and women’s basketball programs at a cost of close to $15,000. Tennessee, like most schools, found a corporate sponsor to offset all or most of the costs.
Delaney said Tennessee officials were looking at ways to upgrade their pregame experience when they saw how spectators at a Taylor Swift concert got wristbands that lit up in sync to the music. They looked online for additional ideas and discovered what other schools were doing with Cue Audio’s service.
« Wristbands are really cool, but we’d have to pass them out and get them back and all that, » Delaney said. « What’s a better way? Cellphones. »
Early adopters of the program included North Carolina, Marquette, Purdue, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Tennessee came aboard with plenty of other schools this year, as the number of colleges subscribing to the service nearly doubled.
That’s raised some concern about whether the novelty of these pregame light shows will wear off. In the Big Ten alone, Cue Audio subscribers include Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State and Purdue.
« It’s, in my opinion, kind of lost its ‘wow’ factor because so many people use it now, » said Michaela Patt, Purdue’s director of content, strategy and innovation.
Many schools also have capitalized on other services offered by Cue Audio. That includes participating in basketball trivia contests at halftime or having fans take selfies that appear on the video board.
« It’s all about capturing the fans’ attention and keeping them engaged in the game when what they came for is not going on, » Beale said.
Other teams have discovered more organic ways of attracting fans.
Tennessee’s players added some flair to the end of their pregame warmups this season by having one player dunk while teammates jumped in unison, a stunt nicknamed « One Fly, We All Fly. »
After slow-motion versions of this stunt started circulating on social media, the stunt went viral with numerous high school and college teams and even the NBA’s Miami Heat trying out their own versions.
Tennessee has won 25 consecutive home games, and its average attendance of 18,945 is up 16.9 percent over last season and 38.9 percent over 2016-17. Delaney says fans email and call before every game asking when they must arrive to see the pregame dunk.
« No doubt, » Tennessee forward Grant Williams said after a recent victory over Vanderbilt. « I saw it tonight. I was like, ‘Wow, there are a lot of people here,’ when we first got here…. And I think it was like an hour-and-a-half before the game. »

Microsoft Band: Users of the defunct fitness tracker offered a refund

0

Three years after it stopped making the device, Microsoft has said it’s finally ending support for its Band fitness tracker. The good news is that current users, if there are any still out there, can obtain a partial refund. Owner of the original band can get a useful $80, while those with a Band 2 can receive $175.
Remember the Microsoft Band? The wrist-worn fitness tracker launched in 2014, but just two years later the tech company abandoned it in the face of tough competition from the makers of similar devices.
Microsoft continued to support the Band and Band 2 fitness trackers via its Health Dashboard apps and services, but on Friday it announced it’s finally pulling the plug on the platform.
It means that from May 31,2019, Microsoft will end support for the Health Dashboard, with all related apps set to leave the Microsoft Store, Google Play, and Apple App store at the same time.
While customers will be able to continue using their Microsoft Band device, the web-connected features will no longer be available, the company confirmed in a message on its website. Band owners have until the end of May 2019 to export their fitness data or to transfer it to another service or wearable.
Notably, Microsoft said it would offer a refund to certain customers who own the Band. It includes those whose device is still covered under warranty, or, alternatively, anyone considered as an “active user” of the device. Microsoft defines this as someone “who has worn the Band on their wrist and completed a data sync from the Band to the Health Dashboard between December 1,2018, and March 1,2019.”
If that’s you, then expect to receive an email with refund instructions — and be sure to put in your claim before August 30,2019. Owners of the original Band, which launched in 2014 for $200, will receive $80, while owners of the Band 2, which sold for $250, will get $175.
The GPS-enabled Band can count steps, monitor heart rate, map runs, calculate ultraviolet exposure, and provide sleep data, among other features. It can also send notifications via a smartphone by way of a gentle vibration.
The device launched in October 2014 with the improved Band 2 following exactly a year later. But in the fall of 2016, Microsoft announced it had sold out of the tracker and had no plans to make any more.
The decision came at around the same time as the launch of the Apple Watch, which had fitness trackers very much in its sights, while competitors such as Fitbit were already enjoying decent sales with their own offerings.
Truth be told, the Band didn’t get off to the best of starts. Sure, it came with plenty of smarts, but it was slated for its disappointing design. The Band 2 was a definite improvement, but DT’s review at the time still described it as a device that “collapses short of the finish line.”
