Clint Dempsey fed Jozy Altidore for the go-ahead goal, then scored on a free kick to match Landon Donovan’s American record with his 57th international goal and lead the United States over Costa Rica 2-0 and into the CONCACAF Gold Cup championship game
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Clint Dempsey grew up playing youth soccer in the Dallas area, nearly 200 miles from his Texas hometown.
Back in his home state and coming off the bench, Dempsey matched American international scoring record and sparked the U. S. to a spot in the CONCACAF Gold Cup title game.
Dempsey fed Jozy Altidore for the go-ahead goal not long after entering, then scored on a free kick to match Landon Donovan with his 57th international goal Saturday night in a 2-0 semifinal win over Costa Rica.
“This has to be the best in Texas for me, since I tied the record and it was an important game, ” the 34-year-old forward from Nacogdoches.
Dempsey entered in the 66th minute and made a perfectly timed through pass six minutes later that allowed Altidore to break in alone and beat goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton with a left-footed shot from 10 yards.
Dempsey doubled the lead in the 82nd minute with a 27-yard shot that went around a four-man defensive wall that got past Pemberton on two bounces.
“I saw the keeper cheating a little bit, and it went in, ” Dempsey said.
Dempsey has 136 international appearances, trailing only Cobi Jones (164) and Donovan (157) among American men. The assist was his 20th for the national team.
“Coming back from two heart procedures, being able to still play at this level, ” Dempsey said in his Texas twang, “living a dream. So I’m happy.”
After starting in Wednesday’s quarterfinal win over El Salvador, Dempsey moved to a reserve role against the Ticos. While the U. S. inserted five new starters in a roster rotation, Costa Rica went with the same 11 who opened in Wednesday’s win against Panama.
“I know it’s something that was important to Clint, and to score that goal in a big game makes it even more special for him, ” coach Bruce Arena said.
Arena said the plan all along was to have Dempsey enter the semifinal between the 60th and 70th minutes, to provide a spark when legs got heavy.
“He thought it was going to be a tight game, and they’ll bring me on late and it’ll open up, ” Dempsey said. “He was right with what he said. It’s always going to be a little difficult to try and go 90 three days after going 90 against El Salvador, so I was happy with the decision.”
Trying for their sixth Gold Cup title and first since 2013, the Americans play Mexico or Jamaica in the final on Wednesday at Santa Clara, California.
The U. S. improved to 8-0-5 since Arena replaced Jurgen Klinsmann in November and returned for a second stint as national team coach. Arena can become the first coach to win three Gold Cup titles following championships in 2002 and 2005.
Tim Howard got his second straight shutout and 42nd overall for the U. S., making key saves on Marco Urena in the 37th and 71st minutes.
After the second save, Dempsey took a pass from Darlington Nagbe in the center circle, made a cut, and took three touches as he sprinted toward goal. Altidore one-timed a shot for his first national team goal since September and ripped off his No. 27 jersey in a wild celebration, earning a yellow card.
Dempsey’s goal sealed the win, putting the U. S. back in the championship after a shocking semifinal loss to Jamaica two years ago. He was playing for the first time in AT&T Stadium, the $1.2 billion home stadium of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
“Look, Clint’s ability to impact a game with goals, assists at the highest level is nothing new, ” American captain Michael Bradley said. “Bruce felt like for tonight his ability to come off the bench and come into a game, that maybe had started to open up a little bit, was going to make a difference and it sure did.”
Dempsey said he bought 27 tickets for the game and saw many more people from his hometown.
“Congratulations, Clint. Feel free to stop now. We’ll share it together, ” Donovan said while commentating during the Fox telecast.
Costa Rica routed the U. S. 4-0 at home in a World Cup qualifier in November, the final game before Klinsmann was fired and Arena was brought back. And up ahead is another matchup, a qualifier on Sept. 1 at Harrison, New Jersey.
Jordan Morris, who replaced Dempsey, was among five new starters and hit a post just 11 seconds in. Arena didn’t want Dempsey playing three full matches in an eight-day span.
Dempsey hopes to play in a fourth World Cup next year.
“He understands where he is in his career, ” Arena said. “There’s going to be games he’ll start, games where he’ll play the role he played tonight. Things can change in other directions, but that’s the plan right now.”

Prince Harry is speaking out and admitting that he does have some regrets. If he had known that it would be the last time he saw his mom Princess Diana, then he would have said a few things to her that he missed out on saying. People shared what Prince Harry revealed recently. Prince Harry and Prince William are both opening up in a new documentary.
ITV’s Our Mother Diana: Her Life and Legacy special will air in the U. K. on Monday. August 21 marks the 20th anniversary since Diana lost her life. This show will also have appearances from Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, Elton John, and Rihanna.
One thing that Prince William and Prince Harry revealed is that they do not have plans to speak out in length about their mother again like the way that they did in the big documentary. The very last conversation that they had with their mother was a short one. They were only fifteen and twelve at the time and, of course, didn’ t know that it would be their last call with their mom. Things would have been different for sure had they known. They were in a hurry to run off and play with their cousins instead of being on the phone with their mom.
Prince Harry spoke out and said, “And if I’ d known that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother the things that I would – the things I would have said to her.” Another thing that Prince Harry shared was that he has only cried twice over the death of his mother. He said that he cried at her graveside at Althorp on September 6,1997, and since then “maybe, maybe once.” Harry went on to say that there is not a day that they do not wish that their mother was here by their side. He says that they wonder what kind of mother she would be now. William shared that he feels like this documentary is a tribute to their mom from her sons.
Are you excited to see the big documentary from Prince Harry and Prince William about their mother Princess Diana? This will be airing in the U. K. on Monday, but hopefully, everyone will be able to find it in the United States to watch as well soon after. People and ABC have partnered in a two-night television event, The Story of Diana, airing on Aug. 9 and 10 at 9 p.m. ET.

YouTube’s Video Editor is ‘going away’ soon because no one is using it

0

YouTube says it’s going to ditch its online Video Editor tool because hardly anyone is using it. It’ll disappear in September.
YouTube is ditching its Video Editor tool because hardly anyone uses it. The video-streaming giant said the tool will “go away” on September 20, so if you’ re one of those rare few who does still crank it up, you’ ll need to make sure your project is done and dusted by that date.
Launched in 2010, the web-based Video Editor offers basic tools that allow you to create a sequence with your clips before uploading it to the streaming site.
The Google-owned outfit said it has seen “limited usage” of the feature, prompting the company to take it offline in a couple of months.
“You can download your own videos from YouTube in 720p or use Google Takeout to retrieve your original files, in case you are looking to remix your uploaded videos into a new video, ” the company outfit pointed out in a post announcing Video Editor’s imminent closure.
However, YouTube pointed out that it is keeping Enhancements as part of its Video Manager, which lets you make improvements to your video via things like trimming, blurring, and filters. You’ ll also be able to continue making use of the audio library, slow-motion options, subtitling tool, and end screens, among other features.
In the same announcement, YouTube said it was also removing its Photo slideshow tool on September 20. Like its Video Editor, YouTubers have also shown little interest in the offering.
The company noted that anyone wishing to edit videos before uploading them to the streaming site can make use of a slew of free and paid offerings from a range of companies. There are plenty of smartphone-based video editing apps for casual hobbyists looking to knock something together in a few taps, while more fully featured options are available for desktops, too.
Digital Trends recently tracked down the best free and easy-to-use editing software on the market for anyone interested in sprucing up their videos. iPhone and Mac users, for example, can make use of iMovie, a solid piece of Apple software with a range of features that has expanded gradually over the years.
The VDSC Free Video Editor is a useful option for Windows users, though admittedly it does have a bit of a clunky interface.
Cross-platform choices include Lightworks and Avidemux, with the former offering the most features among the software listed here.

Just before kickoff, El Salvador defender Henry Romero was suspended for his nation’s next six competitive matches and midfielder Darwin Ceren for the next three, those penalties coming three days after Romero bit Altidore and Ceren bit Omar Gonzalez during the quarterfinal. The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football said the discipline was issued by the Gold Cup disciplinary committee for “anti-sporting behavior.”

An Agile and Software Craftsmanship expert sat down with a DZone MVB to discuss the katas, TDD, pair programming, and his experience in Software Craftsmanship.
In this series of ‘3-minute Q&As,’ we give you an insight into some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers in the world of Agile and Software Craftsmanship.
So sit back, relax, and take a sneak peek. Oh, and if you like this and want more, then you should also check out sc-london.com, where you can immerse yourself in two-days of talks, discussions, and networking with the authors of the blogs.
Sometime around 2008, I think.
A community of knowledge and practice applied in the detail to benefit more than oneself.
The substance and focus will remain and evolve, but I suspect that it may find itself going by another name or becoming allied or integrated into other bodies of practice.
That there’s more to katas than just deliberate practice. Katas and small well-framed problems offer an opportunity to experiment, to deepen knowledge, to get creative and think laterally, to find simplicity, elegance and aha! moments in something familiar or seemingly trivial. And fun.
I see them being used as warm-ups, as a social activity, as a way to kick the tires of new tools, languages, and practices. At the most common introductory level, they seem to be, unsurprisingly, about learning TDD and pairing. This remains true at other experience levels, but with other levels, people seem more likely to use katas as vehicles for other ends, such as experimentation.
Yes: immersion, conversation, presentation (giving and receiving) , reading and writing. In other words, the traditional other ways of refining and exploring skills and knowledge.
At some point soon I plan to start collecting contributions for 97 Things Every Java Programmer Should Know. Like 97 Things Every Programmer Should Know before it, I will be looking for short contributions on anything from the mechanics of the code to the people and practices that surround it.

Building and Running Crafter CMS From Source. It's Simple! Building and Running Crafter CMS From Source. It's Simple!

0

We take a quick look at how to use the open-source CMS, Crafter, from cloning its repository, to building an environment, and staring/stopping all services.
Crafter CMS is an open-source content management system for web sites, mobile apps, VR, and more. You can learn more about Crafter here. In this article, you will learn how to build Crafter CMS from source as well as how to start and stop the services. It’s very easy! Thanks to Gradle and a very easy install process, you will be up and running in 3 simple command line operations!
You must have these prerequisites on your system before you begin:
Build all Crafter CMS modules:
You can now point your browser to http: //localhost: 8080/studio and start using Crafter CMS. To get started with your first Crafter CMS experience, you can follow this guide.
You might have noticed that you essentially have two environments built and running: authoring and delivery. Crafter CMS is a decoupled CMS, and that means you have an authoring environment that caters to content creators, and a different environment, delivery, that handles the end-users that use the experience created by the former.
As a developer, you can use an authoring environment for most tasks without the need to run a delivery environment. It’s important to note that delivery essentially runs the same software that’s in authoring except Crafter Studio (the authoring tools) . By default, this project will build both environments unless instructed otherwise.
To start and stop one of the two environments is similar to building/starting/stopping all of them.

Merging Transactional and Predictive Analytics to Scale IoT Merging Transactional and Predictive Analytics to Scale IoT

0

A core value of IoT is using the data it gathers for predictive analytics and decision making. Take a look at one solution, and the code to go with it.
The digital universe is estimated to see a 50-fold data increase in the 2010-2020 decade. Gartner expects 6.4 billion connected things will be in use worldwide in 2018, up 30% from 2015, and will reach 20.8 billion by 2020.
When it comes to the IoT, this involves an increasing number of complex projects encompassing hundreds of suppliers, devices, and technologies. Michele Pelino and Frank E. Gillett from Forrester predict fleet management in transportation, security and surveillance applications in government, inventory and warehouse management applications in retail and industrial asset management in primary manufacturing will be the hottest areas for IoT growth.
The impact of increasing the amount of data is the increase in velocity in which we have to ingest that data, perform data analysis and filter the relevant information. With a stream of millions of events per second coming in from IoT devices, organizations must equip themselves with flexible, comprehensive and cost-effective solutions for their IoT needs.
At GigaSpaces, we’ ve come to a realization that the solution to this growing need is not radically changing an existing architecture, but rather extending it through in-memory computing to enable fast analytics and control against fast data. The combination of low latency streaming analytics, along with transactional workflow triggers, enables acting on IoT data in the moment. This includes predictive maintenance and anomaly detection again millions of sensor data points.
Magic Software Enterprises, a global provider of enterprise-grade application development and business process integration software solutions and a vendor of a broad range of software and IT services, has been leveraging GigaSpaces XAP for years. When Magic came out with their xpi Integration Platform, they were looking for a data aggregation solution to form an IoT Hub in front of Magic xpi. This solution needed to be flexible enough to meet a variety of applications regardless the data and velocity requirements.
In the age of fast data, the xpi platform, although proving operational interoperability, it still faces the challenge of many existing platforms that are not ready to handle fast data ingestion scenarios. Magic was looking for a POC which could be implemented as quickly as possible while delivering fast results.
InsightEdge was the perfect choice to help the Magic IoT solutions handle all the difficult data transformation challenges, allowing customers to concentrate on designing the best processes and flows to support their business goals. The solution needed to be to be flexible and open to any type of data input, regardless the type and structure of the data, the velocity, running in-memory. That’s where we came in. During our meeting, we suggested a simple solution based on Kafka and InsightEdge to help facilitate data velocity and variety in IoT use cases.
By integrating InsightEdge in-memory streaming technology, incoming sensor data is analyzed through a multitude of predefined filters and rules and aggregated by InsightEdge. The aggregated data is easily compared, correlated and merged and is transferred in batches to Magic xpi, where a prediction engine is first to predict when IoT equipment failure might occur, and to prevent the occurrence of the failure by performing maintenance. Monitoring for future failure allows maintenance to be planned before the failure occurs.
InsightEdge provides Magic with a few key benefits:
Using InsightEdge, Magic is able to provide its customers with fast data streaming and the ability to perform aggregations and calculation capabilities on the in-memory grid. Using the XAP data grid makes the streaming process it that much faster, hence eliminating the need for Hadoop.
InsightEdge facilities Magic’s customer needs for the IoT deployments with predictive manufacturing and maintenance, enabling them to receive real-time, fast, data-driven events from their systems.
A live InsightEdge use case is Car Telemetry Ingestion and Data Prediction using Magic’s xpi. In the case of car telemetry, it is very hard to predict in advance what data will be useful. In the case of data prediction, we need to think about not only device telemetry but also diagnostic telemetry.
Predictive car maintenance requires car telemetry ingestion and data prediction. Magic’s solution stack needed one more component in the architecture to be fully compliant with fast data and scalable scenarios, assured innovation was needed and the correct puzzle piece to fit.
In this use case, we will cover post-data-collection (assuming we have CSV files but could have been streaming all the same) and up until the data sent to Magic’s xpi Integration Platform.
Apache Kafka is a distributed streaming platform, or a reliable message broker on steroids but not limited to just that. It enables building real-time streaming data pipelines that reliably get data between systems or applications and building real-time streaming applications that transform or react to the streams of data.
We’ ll be using version “kafka_2.10-0.9.0.0” to run our tests, however, newer Kafka versions are out there. You can download Kafka here or download the specific version we’ ve used for this use case.
Kafdrop is a simple UI monitoring tool for message brokers. In this case, we will use it for Kafka to moderate the topics and messages content during development. Download Kafdrop using the instructions on the Git page and install following the instructions.
InsightEdge is a high-performance Spark distribution designed for low latency workloads and extreme analytics processing in one unified solution. With a robust analytics capacity and virtually no latency, InsightEdge provides immediate results. GigaSpaces’ Spark distribution eliminates dependency on Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) so as to break through the embedded performance “glass ceiling” of the “stranded” Spark offering. To this, GigaSpaces has added enterprise-grade features, such as high-availability and security. The result is a hardened Spark distribution that is thirty times faster than standard Spark.
Download InsightEdge here. No installation needed, simply unzip the file to the desired location. (Note: Not compatible with Windows)
First, we need to start Kafka and InsightEdge, so we’ ll use the following two scripts:
For example, if I run ZooKeeper locally and on port 2081, use the following:
Browse to the local instance to make sure it works [link: http: //localhost: 9000]
Now we’ ll have to build our model, so let’s see how it should look like:
Next, we write our event class (to handle incoming events:
Now that we have our Model and Event-Model we can write the code we want to deploy to Spark (which will actually read from Kafka to Spark and persist to the grid) :
Now, we have three options of running logic:
We chose to go with the third option as we have scalability and growth considerations. We need to take into account dozen of external processes running rather than one very long event on the grid. It’s a simple push/pull decision and we’ ve decided to pull (If you wish to implement a Processing Unit (PU) , see appendix 1) .
To run the above code, we’ ll use a simple script that will call the generated JAR file:
As a bonus, here’s a code to remove all the car events from the space (the Grid that is) :
Now that we can dispatch the events from the Grid, let’s work backward on deploying the spark job so it can listen on the Kafka topic and ingest the data:
Now we have everything running except two things: The code on collecting the data from the CSV file and how to run it. Here’s the code:
So you might be asking yourselves what is the CSVProducer? Well, here it is:
Run it by using the following script:
This is a general template of how to implement a PU.
Magic xpi is an integration platform that connects IT systems, enabling you to orchestrate data flows that support your business goals. It supports a wide range of business ecosystems, implementing out-of-the-box certified and optimized connectors and adapters to extend the capabilities of leading ERP, CRM, finance, and other enterprise systems.
Magic xpi acts as the orchestration engine between all relevant parts: Knowledge Bases, Machine Learning, Asset Management and Service Cases. Magic xpi orchestrates and connects data based on services using HTTP-trigger (XML) and ODATA provider. Magic xpi interacts with dedicated ecosystems using Magic xpi connectors.
It is estimated that by 2017,60% of global manufacturers will use analytics to sense and analyze data from connected products and manufacturing and optimize increasingly complex portfolios of products. By 2018, the proliferation of advanced, purpose-built, analytic applications aligned with the IoT will result in 15% productivity improvements for manufacturers regarding innovation delivery and supply chain performance.
The flexibility of combining transactional and analytics functionality provided by InsightEdge and XAP is what separates GigaSpaces from the rest. With Magic’s use case, we are enabling IoT applications at scale through open source components at the center, edge, and cloud.
Gigaspaces newest data product, InsightEdge offers an Apache Spark-empowered analytics platform to help facilitate full-spectrum analytics (streaming, machine learning, and graph processing) in IoT use cases. We are happy to integrate into Magic’s solution stack, which required full compliance with fast data and scalable scenarios.

Reducing MTTR Reducing MTTR

0

We talk about what MTTR is, and four steps that all web performance teams must take in order to reduce MTTR and increase the performance of their site.
There’s been a lot of discussion lately regarding the need to track and improve MTTR, but what exactly does MTTR mean? Well, MTTR can stand for several different things: mean time to repair, mean time to recovery, and mean time to resolve. Not only are there different definitions, but when the timer starts and stops can vary as well.
Incident resolution can be broken down into four main steps: detect, identify, fix, and verify. All of these actions should be included in MTTR, regardless of which terminology you decide to go with.
How long it takes to detect a problem depends on the tools and solutions that are used to alert on issues, and has a direct impact on alert fatigue. When ops teams are bombarded with non-stop alerts, many of which turn out to be false positives, it doesn’ t take long for the alerts to start getting ignored. When this happens, it’s likely that many incidents will go undetected until a user complains. Even with a variety of toolsets in place, 36% of IT organizations find out about application-related problems via calls from users, according to a research study conducted by Enterprise Management Associates.
Once an issue has been detected, the next hurdle is to identify the problem. This can often be the most time-consuming aspect of incident resolution as IT ops teams sift through massive amounts of data from a variety of sources on a quest to find the cause. Data needs to be analyzed to determine if the issue is at the network, regional, system, or third-party level.
Once you know what needs to be done, the necessary teams can be tasked with fixing it. Some organizations may stop the MTTR timer once the fix has been rolled out, but there is one more step that should be included.
What good is rolling out a fix if you don’ t actually verify the fix resolves the incident? It is possible one issue was masking other issues, which would mean that there are still issues that need to be resolved. The MTTR time should be stopped when there is verification that all systems are once again operating as expected and end users are no longer negatively affected.
