James Mattis: War With North Korea Would Be "Catastrophic"

0

“…an armed conflict with North Korea would be catastrophic to US allies in the region… would be probably the worst kind of fighting…”
Defense Secretary James Mattis appeared on “Face the Nation” with John Dickerson on Sunday and repeated his warning that an armed conflict with North Korea would be “catastrophic” for US allies in the region, and that it “would be probably the worst kind of fighting” because of the North’s proximity to the South Korean capital, Seoul.
“A conflict in North Korea, John, would be probably the worst kind of fighting in most people’s lifetimes. Why do I say this? The North Korean regime has hundreds of artillery cannons and rocket launchers within range of one of the most densely populated cities on earth, which is the capital of South Korea.”
Mattis told a Pentagon news conference earlier this month that a war with the north would be “tragic on an unbelievable scale, ” suggesting that the Trump administration would seek to exhaust all alternatives before resorting to military action.
“We are working with the international community to deal with this issue. This regime is a threat to the region, to Japan, to South Korea. And in the event of war, they would bring danger to China and to Russia as well. But the bottom line is it would be a catastrophic war if this turns into a combat if we’re not able to resolve this situation through diplomatic means.”
Mattis affirms that the North is a threat to the US, but he stops short of drawing a line in the sand when he tells Dickerson he’ d prefer not to answer a question about what the North could do, if anything, to provoke a response from the US. The president, Mattis said, needs “political maneuver room on the issue.”
“It is a direct threat to the United States. They have been very clear in their rhetoric we don’t have to wait until they have an intercont- intercontinental ballistic missile with a nuclear weapon on it to say that now it’s manifested completely.”
“Yeah, I’d prefer not to answer that question, John. The president needs political maneuver room on this issue. We– we do not draw red lines unless we intend to carry them out. We’ve made very clear that we’re willing to work with China and we believe China has tried to be helpful in this regard.”
North Korea launched another missile into the Sea of Japan Sunday evening, a few hours after Mattis appeared on the show, and shortly after the Pentagon said it is preparing to test its capability to shoot down an intercontinental-range missile next week.

Beware of Judy: Researchers reveal Android malware may have already infected over 36 MILLION handsets

Once installed on a phone, the rogue apps created by a Korean firm generate large amounts of fraudulent clicks on advertisements, generating revenues for the perpetrators behind it.
Security experts have warned of a major Android malware scam on Google’s Play Store.
Dubbed malware, its uses apps believed to have been downloaded up to 18 million times to infect devices.
Once installed on a phone, the apps generate large amounts of fraudulent clicks on advertisements, generating revenues for the perpetrators behind it.
Scroll down for video
‘The malicious apps reached an astonishing spread between 4.5 million and 18.5 million downloads, ‘ said Check Point, the security firm that discovered the malware.
The malware, dubbed ‘Judy’, is an auto-clicking adware which was found on 41 apps developed by a Korean company.
The company’s name is Kiniwini, and it also appears on the Google Play Store as ENISTUDIO corp, say the researchers.
The malware uses infected devices to generate large amounts of fraudulent clicks on advertisements, generating revenues for the perpetrators behind it.
The malicious apps reached an astonishing spread between 4.5 million and 18.5 million downloads.
‘Some of the apps we discovered resided on Google Play for several years, but all were recently updated, ‘ the team said.
It is unclear how long the malicious code existed inside the apps, hence the actual spread of the malware remains unknown.
Other developers are believed to have used the same code to crete their own versions of the exploit.
‘We also found several apps containing the malware, which were developed by other developers on Google Play.
‘The connection between the two campaigns remains unclear, and it is possible that one borrowed code from the other, knowingly or unknowingly.’
The oldest app of the second campaign was last updated in April 2016, meaning that the malicious code hid for a long time on the Play store undetected.
These apps also had a large amount of downloads between 4 and 18 million, meaning the total spread of the malware may have reached between 8.5 and 36.5 million users.
After Check Point notified Google about this threat, the apps were swiftly removed from the Play store.

On this week’s episode of Technotopia we talk to Sarah Kaufman, the Assistant Director at the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy & Management. Kaufman is working to create new transit opportunities for New Yorkers – and the world – and expects the future to be quite interesting.
Her prediction? As we move towards self-driving cars we will see more options for paratransit – the services available for folks who can’ t use public transit. These new services will get us all from point A to point B safely and quickly and, thanks to increases in efficiency, far more cheaply. Listen in to hear her predictions. Technotopia is a podcast about a better future by John Biggs. You can subscribe in Sticher or iTunes and download the MP3 here.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson dons a black leather vest and sunglasses as he mounts his Harley Davidson for the 'Rolling Thunder' tribute

0

Tillerson, who is usually seen in somber, dark suits, donned a black leather vest which had a variety of badges sewn on including a Department of State badge and the American Flag.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson joined tens of thousands of bikers on Sunday as they rode through the heart of Washington D. C. in an annual ‘Rolling Thunder’ tribute to US military veterans and war dead.
Tillerson, who is usually seen in somber, dark suits, donned a black leather vest which had a variety of badges sewn on including a Department of State badge, the American Flag, as well as the word ‘Longhorn.’
The 65-year-old also wore jeans, a black shirt, and sunglasses, before swapping his cap for a bike helmet as he mounted his burgundy colored Harley.
The former Exxon Mobil chief executive is well known for his love of motorbikes. After the United States imposed sanctions on Moscow in 2014, Russian oil tsar Igor Sechin famously told the press he would miss three things; enjoying US culture, introducing his children to the impressive American landscapes, and riding motorbikes with Tillerson.
Tillerson joined cyclists from all over the country who came together on Sunday for the 30th anniversary of the Rolling Thunder’s ‘Ride for Freedom’.
Many carried flags or wore the stars-and-stripes of the American flag, as they rolled noisily around the National Mall, the federal capital’s grand central esplanade, under the eyes of thousands of spectators.
The Rolling Thunder movement was founded in 1988 by a Vietnam War veteran named Ray Manzo who wanted to draw the attention of both the administration and the broader public to American soldiers missing in Vietnam since that war ended in 1975.
The first edition of the parade drew some 3,000 to 5,000 bikers, many of them active military personnel or veterans. But the numbers soared in following years.
Organizers estimate that as many as 900,000 people – cyclists and spectators – now take part each year.
While attention to Vietnam-era troops still missing in action (MIAs) has waned over the years – some 1,600 have never been accounted for — veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Vietnam, say they often feel isolated and forgotten once they return to civilian life.
And many face the deep frustrations of dealing with a health-care and social-support system for veterans that has often been criticized as inefficient and sometimes inadequate.
But Rolling Thunder, they say, gives them a sense of solidarity and a contact with the public that boosts their morale.
‘It’s very heartwarming to see people supporting military and former military, ‘ said Bob Vaillancourt, 50, a veteran who rode his Harley-Davidson here from Michigan.
Concerned particularly by the high suicide rate among veterans — some 20 take their own lives every day, according to US statistics — Vaillancourt says ‘the government is not doing enough to understand the mess that is in the head’ of some veterans.
Many of the bikers, such as 58-year-old marine veteran Cecil Dorriety from South Carolina, seem to support the new administration of President Donald Trump.
‘We need more support for the veterans. Hopefully it will come with the new administration, ‘ said Dorriety, who rode his Harley-Davidson here.
The parade, which thunders so loudly that it shakes buildings along its route, also attracts cycling enthusiasts drawn to a chance to take part in the good-natured demonstration.
Olivier Le Ber, a 54-year-old French expatriate living in Washington, has been a Rolling Thunder participant for years, along with family members on their own Harley-Davidsons.
He says he appreciates the ‘patriotic homage’ and the sense of ‘brotherhood and solidarity’ it creates.
Rolling Thunder gives people a chance ‘to meet other people one would normally never talk to.’

Did outsourcing cause the British Airways IT meltdown?

It’s been a rough few days for British Airways. On Saturday, the iconic British flag carrier experienced a serious IT meltdown, which resulted in planes being unable to take off, and passengers unable to check into their flights.
This global outage is bad news for British Airways. The airline is expected to be on the hook for £150 million (roughly $192 million) in compensation to passengers who had their bank holiday weekend plans disrupted.
So, what caused it?
British Airways CEO Alex Cruz confirmed to the Guardian that the issue was with a power surge at one of its UK-based data centers. This problem was compounded by the fact that back-up systems that should have automatically stepped in, didn’ t.
But significant criticism has been leveled at the airline due to the fact that in recent years, UK-based IT staff have been laid off and replaced with Indian replacements from Tata Consultancy Services, a major outsourcing company.
In 2016, British Airways slashed 700 jobs in the UK. According to Mick Rix, a representative of trade union GMB, five of these worked in the equipment and facilities team at the facility that experienced the power surge.
For what it’s worth, British Airways has strenuously denied that outsourcing was responsible for the outage. Speaking to The Guardian, Alex Cruz said:
This denial has been responded with derision by Rix, who said Cruz was “talking out of his hat.”
Whatever narrative is true, the fact is Saturday’s outage has reignited the debate around outsourcing and the IT industry.
Over the past year, British Airways has been on a cost-cutting binge, as it tries to reduce its overheads in order to compete with the ubiquitous low-cost carriers. On certain long-haul routes, the airline has axed the second meal service in economy. Within Europe, it’s ditched free food and drink entirely, replacing it with a buy-on-board service.
And yes, it’s fired a significant number of techies.
Perhaps the mistake British Airways made was confusing an IT worker — with their years of expertise in the complex computer systems, both legacy and new, that make up BA’s technology infrastructure — with a prawn sandwich.
One is easily replaceable. The other is an IT worker.

Carolina Field of Honor commemorates Memorial Day

The stars and stripes flew at half-mast across the Carolina Field of Honor in Triad Park on Memorial Day.
The park hosted hundreds of people for a Memorial Day service.
“We just can’t forget what it’s all about, ” said Caleb Homol, who attended the event.
“I think it means something very special to all of us as a whole, as a group, ” said Bill Moss, USMC Vet.
Veterans, Gold Star families, and their loved ones gathered to pay their respects to the 1.4 million Americans who have died in combat from Valley Forget to Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We need to remember that, ” said Tom Dayvault, USA, Vet. “It’s because of them that we can celebrate the freedoms we have today.”
For this group, Memorial Day is a solemn occasion. But at the same time, Moss says, “Memorial Day is one of the best days we have of the year.”
It’s a dedicated time to pause and reflect.
“We’re basically too busy, ” Moss said. “Anytime we’re not at war or it’s not on the front page news or in a newspaper, people tend to forget about it.”
“It’s all about people’s sacrifices for their everyday lives, ” Homol said. “I mean, no one has to sign up people do it just because they want to for our nation and our freedom.”
The service honored fallen soldiers, as well as those still living.
“The ones who don’t talk much about it did a lot, ” said MajGen Andrew O’Donnell, Jr., USMC, Ret. “The ones that didn’t do that much talk a lot about it. SO you never know what a warrior looks like. He’s probably sitting next to you right now.”
It’s a reminder that while all gave some, some gave all.
“Hopefully on this day we tell somebody else about that person, ” Dayvault said. “That makes them live forever.”

A female zookeeper was killed Monday by a tiger that entered an enclosure with her at a wildlife park in Britain, authorities said.
May 29 (UPI) — A female zookeeper was killed Monday by a tiger that entered an enclosure with her at a wildlife park in Britain, authorities said.
Hamerton Zoo Park was evacuated after what it called a “freak accident.” At no point did the tiger escape its enclosure, the zoo and police said.
“A tiger had entered an enclosure with a keeper, ” Cambridgeshire Police said . “Sadly the female zoo keeper died at the scene.”
The zookeeper’s name was not released by the zoo or police .
“We are sorry but our staff are too distressed to speak directly to the media, as one of our colleagues was killed at Hamerton Zoo Park this morning, ” the zoo said on its website .
“This appears to have been a freak accident. All our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues friends and families at this dreadful time.”
The zoo and police said an investigation is underway. The park will be closed on Tuesday.
“The incident is not believed to be suspicious, ” Cambridgeshire Police said.
Hamerton Zoo Park, in the hamlet of Steeple Gidding near Cambridge, has housed tigers since 2001. It includes enclosures for Malaysian and Bengal big cats in its Land of the Tiger exhibit.
Another zoo exhibit, Cheetah Country, opened in 1998.
In October 2008 a cheetah that escaped from the park was found by a 9-year-old boy in the back garden of his family home.
