Duke's Grayson Allen starting Wednesday

DURHAM, N. C., Jan. 4 (UPI) — Grayson Allen’s “indefinite” suspension for tripping lasted one game.
The junior All-American is averaging 16 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season. The Blue Devils lost its only game without Allen Saturday, falling 89-75 to Virginia Tech. Allen’s last game was Dec. 21 against Elon. During that game, Allen tripped Elon’s Steven Santa Ana, drawing a technical foul.
He was suspended “indefinetly” by Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski on Dec. 22 and was stripped of his captaincy on Jan. 2.
Luke Kennard, Jayson Tatum, Harry Giles, and Amile Jefferson will also start for Duke Wednesday when it faces Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. in ACC play at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Donald Trump backs Julian Assange over Russia hacking claim

President-elect Donald Trump has backed Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in casting doubt on intelligence alleging Russian meddling in the US election.
Mr Assange said Russia was not the source for the site’s mass leak of emails from the Democratic Party.
Mr Trump has now backed that view in a tweet. He wrote: “Assange… said Russians did not give him the info! ”
The president-elect has repeatedly refused to accept the conclusions of the US intelligence community.
Several US agencies including the FBI and the CIA believe Russia directed hacks against the Democratic Party and the campaign of its presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
The information, released through Wikileaks and other outlets, was intended to help Mr Trump win the election, say the FBI and CIA.
On Tuesday evening, Mr Trump said an intelligence briefing he was due to receive on the issue had been delayed.
“Perhaps more time needed to build a case. Very strange! ” he wrote.
But US intelligence officials insisted there had been no delay in the briefing schedule.
In an interview with Fox News , Mr Assange repeated his claim that Russia was not behind the leak.
He also said a 14-year-old could have carried out one of the hacks, on the email account of John Podesta, a top aide of Mrs Clinton.
In 2010, several leading Republican figures were calling for the Wikileaks founder to be imprisoned after his website published thousands of embarrassing diplomatic cables leaked by former Army Pte Chelsea Manning.
Mr Trump tweeted twice on Wednesday morning in support of what Mr Assange said on Fox News.
However, Mr Trump has previously been critical of the Wikileaks organisation.
When asked by a Fox News reporter in 2010 to comment on leaks, he responded: “I think it’s disgraceful, I think there should be like death penalty or something. ”
In another development, Mr Trump’s pick for secretary of state, Rex Tillerson , has agreed he will cut all ties with Exxon Mobil and comply with conflict-of-interest requirements. He departs with a $180m retirement package.
Meanwhile, Republicans have ditched a plan to gut the independent body that investigates political misconduct after a backlash.
The lawmakers’ surprise vote to strip the Office of Congressional Ethics of its independence prompted public uproar and a dressing down from Mr Trump on Twitter.
The secretive move, which overshadowed the first day of the 115th Congress, was reversed in an emergency meeting.
The ethics body was set up in 2008 following a slew of scandals that resulted in several House lawmakers being jailed.
Mr Trump made cleaning up corruption in Washington a key theme of his campaign.
Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan had argued unsuccessfully against the rule change, which was adopted on Monday night in a closed-door meeting.
As the news spread, internet searches for “who is my representative” rocketed, according to Google Trends, and constituents tried to call and email lawmakers to object.
House Republicans called an emergency meeting and abruptly voted to undo the change.

Democratic leaders of the California Legislature signaled their intention Wednesday to fight any challenges to state policies by the incoming administration of Donald Trump by hiring as outside legal counsel former Attorney General Eric Holder.
The announcement came in a joint statement issued by California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon.
“With the upcoming change in administrations, we expect that there will be extraordinary challenges for California in the uncertain times ahead,” said the lawmakers.
Holder will assist Gov. Jerry Brown, yet-to-be-confirmed Attorney General Javier Becerra and the Legislature “to protect California’s economy and our sensible policies on climate change, health care, civil rights and immigration. This is a critical moment in the history of our nation. We have an obligation to defend the people who elected us and the policies and diversity that make California an example of what truly makes our nation great. ”
The move comes amid escalating rhetoric from California leaders, all Democrats, since the election in which Trump lost the state by more than 4 million votes.
Last month Rendon called the Trump administration a ” major existential threat. ” Days later, Brown delivered a full-throated warning that California has no intention of reversing its climate change policies.
“We’ve got the scientists, we’ve got the lawyers, and we’re ready to fight,” Brown told a group of scientists in San Francisco. “We’re ready to defend. California is no stranger to this fight. ”
Holder was attorney general in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2015. He’s currently a partner in the law firm Covington & Burling. According to the Associated Press , the firm will be paid $25,000 a month for three months starting in February. The deal will be renegotiated afterward.
But it’s not going over well with Republican lawmakers.
“The state’s incoming attorney general has spent decades in Washington working on federal policies,” said Assemblyman Chad Mayes, R-Yucca Valley, in a statement quoted by the Sacramento Bee. “It’s not clear why legislative Democrats needed to hire a D. C. insider to litigate the exact same issues. ”
In a statement offered by de Leon’s office, Holder said he was honored to help the Legislature “as it considers how to respond to potential changes in federal law that could impact California’s residents and policy priorities. I am confident that our expertise across a wide array of federal legal and regulatory issues will be a great resource to the legislature. “

Anne Kirkpatrick introduced as Oakland's new police chief

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf officially announced the appointment of the city’s newest police chief on Wednesday. “I am so excited to be in Oakland and be your chief of police,” Anne Kirkpatrick said during the news conference. “I think it’s the greatest opportunity in America policing today. “She is Oakland’s first female police chief, filling a void left open for seven months as the new head of a force that’s been rocked by scandal and a succession of leaders. “I do have the courage to hold officers accountable, but that includes myself,” Kirkpatrick said. “But also to the men and women of the Oakland Police Department, in this chief, I have the courage to stand by you. “Schaaf said community input was the cornerstone of Kirkpatrick’s selection. “Oaklanders wanted a leader with integrity, able to change culture,” she said. Kirkpatrick has 34 years of law enforcement experience. A former chief in Spokane, she most recently worked in Chicago, appointed by Mayor Rahm Emmanuel to lead reform efforts there. Some hope she’ll do the same here. “We’ve got to give her a chance, like we do everybody. Just got to give her a chance to see what’s going to happen,” Oakland NAACP spokesperson Cynthia Adams said. In Oakland, Kirkpatrick will not only have to gain the trust of a skeptical community but also the support of the rank and file. “Through all these turbulent times, Oakland police officers have been working hard for this community and now we hope we have an equally hard-working chief of police to guide us into the New Year,” Barry Donelan said. Unlike prior chiefs, Kirkpatrick does plan to live where she works. “I just told everybody I’ve got to save up some money, y’all are expensive,” she said.

Trump considering overhaul of major intelligence agency, sources say

President-elect Donald Trump is considering an overhaul of the office of the Director of National Intelligence — and Mr. Trump could leave the director post vacant as part of the restructuring, sources tell CBS News’ Major Garrett.
Mr. Trump has been critical of the intelligence agencies after claims in early December that Russia had interfered in the U. S. election. Mr. Trump mocked the intelligence communities on Twitter on Tuesday, claiming his briefing had been delayed.
The briefing will be held on Friday, but sources told CBS News’ Jeff Pegues on Wednesday that the meeting had always been scheduled for Friday.
President-elect Donald Trump expressed more skepticism on Wednesday of the U. S. intelligence community’s conclusions about Russian cyberattacks. …
In a possible sign of a contentious relationship, Mr. Trump on Wednesday sent a tweet that appeared to agree with Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, someone the president-elect had once denounced. Assange published the NSA leaks from Edward Snowden in 2013, and intelligence sources tell CBS News’ Jeff Pegues that the NSA has yet to recover from those disclosures.
Mr. Trump’s fellow Republicans quickly distanced themselves from the comments praising Assange. Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is a member of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Assange a “fugutive from the law with a history of undermining U. S. interests.”
In December, President Obama ordered a full review by the intelligence community of any possible hacking that targeted the presidential election, and results of that report are expected to be presented to Mr. Obama on Thursday.
The heads of the NSA, FBI, DNI and FBI will have an “unprecedented” meeting with Mr. Trump on Friday in New York City, CBS News’ Jeff Pegues reports. Law enforcement sources say this will be the first meeting between the president-elect and FBI director James Comey, whose future at the FBI is unclear after his Oct. 28th decision to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server. Many on Clinton’s team — and it’s been suggested that Clinton herself agrees — have blamed Clinton’s loss on Comey’s announcement.

Utah stores on list of 150 Kmart and Sears stores to close by spring

Just four days into 2017, Sears Holdings announced the closure of dozens of additional Kmart and Sears locations, including some in Utah.
Wednesday, the company informed workers at 78 Kmart Stores and 26 Sears stores that their locations would be closing.
That includes two Kmart locations in Vernal and Layton.
The announcement came days after employees at another 30 Kmart stores and 16 Sears stores across the country were informed their outlets would be shuttered.
Most of the stores will be closing their doors by the end of March 2017.
Sears Holdings released this statement:
Liquidation sales will begin as early as January 6 at all closing stores.
All stores above will close at the end of March except for the following locations:
Kmart, Cromwell, CT – mid-March
Kmart, Mechanicsburg, PA – mid-February
Sears, Florence, SC – mid-February
Sears, Camp Hill, PA – mid-February
* Sears Auto Center will be closed at this location

Now, a new contender, Miraxess, has thrown its hat into the ring in the form of the Mirabook. Compatible with both Microsoft’s Continuum functionality in Windows 10 Mobile as well as Andromium for Android, major specs for the Mirabook will include:

Der FC Bayern München gewinnt Auswärtsspiel in Ulm und verschafft sich vor der Heim-Aufgabe gegen Moskau eine vielversprechende Ausgangslage.
Das neue Jahr fängt gut an für die Basketballer des FC Bayern, zumindest zahlenmäßig: Zum Auftakt der Eurocup-Zwischenrunde gewannen sie das innerdeutsche Duell beim Bundesliga-Tabellenführer Ratiopharm Ulm 68:57 (39:32). In einer Vierergruppe, in der die ersten Zwei weiterkommen in die Playoffs, ist ein Auswärtssieg viel wert. Am kommenden Mittwoch empfangen die Münchner den Gruppenfavoriten Khimki Moskau, der mit 88:80 über den litauischen Klub Lietkabelis Panevezys startete; dann können sie den Wert ihres Erfolges noch steigern.
Spielerisch ließ das Kräftemesse zweier deutscher Spitzenklubs allerdings viel zu wünschen übrig. Von Beginn an entwickelte sich nur zäh ein Spielfluss. Gegen Ende des ersten Viertels übernahmen die Münchner die Kontrolle über die Partie, indem sie die Ulmer schon im Spielaufbau störten, sie zu Ballverlusten zwangen und durch Gegenstöße zu leichten Punkten kamen. Vor allem Devin Booker tat sich in der Phase bis zur Pause hervor: Er entwendete den Gastgebern dreimal den Ball, sammelte sechs Rebounds ein und erzielte 13 Punkte. Am Ende stand ein sogenanntes Double-Double für den Amerikaner zu Buche: 19 Punkte und 15 Rebounds. Nebenmann Maxi Kleber kam auf 15 und neun.
Die sonst so offensivstarken Ulmer fanden nie in ihren Rhythmus. Zum einen, weil ihr Taktgeber Per Günther wegen Nackenproblemen nur zuschaute; zum anderen, weil ihre besten Werfer Raymar Morgan und Chris Babb frühzeitig mit drei Fouls belastet waren und deshalb lange auf der Bank Platz nehmen mussten. Ulms Angriffsleistung war in jeder Hinsicht unterdurchschnittlich, die Trefferquoten lagen unter 30 Prozent, sowohl bei den Dreiern als auch bei den Zweiern – das war kein Vergleich zum 87:79-Triumph in München an Weihnachten. Aus der Distanz waren die FC-Bayern-Profis freilich noch schlechter als ihre Gastgeber: Sie verwandelten nur drei von 26 Dreier-Versuchen, eine Quote von nicht mal zwölf Prozent. An diesem Mittwoch konnten sie es sich leisten. Am nächsten Mittwoch gegen Moskau müssen sie sich aber steigern.

Netanjahu spricht sich für Begnadigung Elor Azarias aus

Israels Premierminister Benjamin Netanjahu hat sich nach dem Schuldspruch für den israelischen Soldaten Elor Azaria für dessen Begnadigung ausgesprochen. “Ich unterstütze eine Begnadigung von Elor Azaria”, schrieb Netanjahu am Abend auf Facebook. Es sei “ein schwieriger und schmerzlicher Tag für uns alle – vor allem für Elor und seine Familie, unsere Soldaten und Zivilisten, mich eingeschlossen. ”
Zuvor hatte ein israelisches Militärgericht in Tel Aviv Azaria wegen Totschlags verurteilt. Die Verkündung des Strafmaßes wird in den kommenden Wochen erwartet. Azaria drohen bis zu 20 Jahre Haft.
Der zum Zeitpunkt der Tat noch 18-jährige Militärsanitäter Azaria hatte im März 2016 einem am Boden liegenden Attentäter in Hebron in den Kopf geschossen. Azaria erklärte im Prozess, er habe befürchtet, der Attentäter könne eine Sprengstoffweste tragen. Der Palästinenser hatte zuvor einen anderen Soldaten mit einem Messer verletzt. Zeugen sagten hingegen aus, Azaria habe ihnen gegenüber angegeben, den Attentäter aus Rache getötet zu haben.
Die Tatsache, dass der am Boden liegende Mann ein Terrorist gewesen sei, rechtfertige nicht die unverhältnismäßige Reaktion des Soldaten, urteilte das Gericht. Es ist extrem selten, dass ein israelisches Militärgericht gegen einen Soldaten entscheidet, der im Dienst tödliche Gewalt angewendet hat.
Kurz nach Verkündung des Schuldspruchs hatte das Büro des israelischen Präsidenten Reuven Rivlin in einer Erklärung gewarnt, eine Debatte über eine Begnadigung Azarias sei verfrüht. Nur Azaria selbst, sein Anwalt oder seine nächsten Angehörigen könnten darum bitten – und das auch erst nach Abschluss des Prozesses. Wenn eine Begnadigung beantragt werde, werde Rivlin sie “nach der üblichen Praxis und nach Empfehlungen der zuständigen Behörden” prüfen, hieß es in der Erklärung.
Das Urteil, das live im israelischen Fernsehen übertragen wurde, beendet eine neunmonatige Kontroverse, die in Israel zu schweren Meinungsverschiedenheiten geführt hat. Militärkommandeure hatten das Verhalten des Soldaten kritisiert, während ihn große Teile der israelischen Öffentlichkeit unterstützten, darunter auch Mitglieder der Regierungskoalition. Ein palästinensischer Mitarbeiter der Menschenrechtsorganisation B’Tselem hatte den Vorfall gefilmt.
Die Familie des getöteten Palästinensers zeigte sich zufrieden mit der Gerichtsentscheidung. “Es ist gerecht. Es ist eine Errungenschaft des Gerichts, dass es den Soldaten verurteilt hat”, sagte Jusri al-Scharif, der Vater des Getöteten, in seiner Heimatstadt Hebron im Westjordanland.
Ein Repräsentant der Angehörigen des Verurteilten warf den Richtern vor, Beweismittel ignoriert zu haben, die auf eine Unschuld des Soldaten hingewiesen hätten. “Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass das Gericht das Messer vom Boden aufgehoben hat und es in den Rücken aller Soldaten gestoßen hat”, sagte ein Sprecher der Familie. Die Verteidigung kündigte Berufung an.
Verteidigungsminister Avigdor Lieberman fordert Respekt für die Gerichtsentscheidung. Auch er finde das Urteil “schwierig”, sagt er. Die Armee müsse jedoch aus politischem Streit herausgehalten werden. Sein Ministerium werde alles tun, um den Soldaten und seine Familie zu unterstützen. Auch Kulturministerin Miri Regev, die früher mehrere Jahre lang eine Sprecherin des Militärs gewesen war, forderte wie andere Politiker der Regierung und der Opposition eine Begnadigung.
Vor der Verkündung der Gerichtsentscheidung versammelten sich Hunderte Demonstranten vor dem Militärhauptquartier in Tel Aviv, um die Freilassung des Soldaten zu fordern. Wie die Jerusalem Post berichtet, skandierten sie “Freiheit für Azaria” und “Terroristen müssen sterben”. Demonstranten stürmten eine Polizeibarrikade, zwei Personen wurden festgenommen.

CES: Hersteller versprechen Neuerfindung des Autos

Las Vegas (dpa) – Das Auto soll künftig mehr als ein Auto sein. Nicht nur ein Fortbewegungsmittel, das einen von A nach B bringt, sondern Freizeit-Zone, Rückzugsort, Unterhaltungszentrale – kurzum: ein Raum, in dem man gerne Zeit verbringt.
Das ist die Idee, mit der Fiat Chrysler auch jüngere Generationen wieder zum Autokauf bewegen will. Denn viele unter ihnen interessieren sich nicht dafür, ein eigenes Auto zu besitzen, sondern verlassen sich auf Mietwagen und Fahrdienste. Der Branche drohen Geschäftsrückgänge.
Zur Technik-Messe CES in Las Vegas reifte die Vision zu einem fertigen Chrysler-Prototyp heran. “Portal”, ein Auto mit auffälligen Schiebetüren und viel Glas sowie einem fast komplett umbaubaren Innenraum. Ziel der Entwickler sei es gewesen, ein Auto für junge Käufer so begehrt zu machen wie ein Smartphone, sagte Chrysler-Managerin Ashley Edgar.
Dafür hat der italienisch-amerikanische Autobauer, der seit Jahren mit Größe sein Überleben in der hart umkämpften Branche sichern will, “Portal” bis ins kleinste Details durchdacht. Punkten soll der Wagen unter anderem mit einem frei gestaltbaren Innenraum mit verschiebbaren und herausnehmbaren Sitzen, Anschlüssen für acht (!) Notebooks und Tablets. Dank getrennter Sound-Zonen können zum Beispiel die Eltern vorn Musik hören und die Kinder auf der Rückbank einen Film sehen – die Schallwellen werden so im Zaum gehalten, dass sie sich nicht gegenseitig stören. Und der Besitzer braucht keinen Autoschlüssel mehr. Wenn eine der Kameras des Autos ihn in der Nähe sieht, öffnet der Wagen automatisch die Tür.
Wie viele der Ideen es am Ende in ein Serienfahrzeug schaffen, ist wie bei allen Konzeptwagen offen. Technik zum autonomen Fahren soll auf jeden Fall integriert werden – sobald sie verfügbar ist.
“Sobald fertig” ist auch die Devise der Firma hinter der zweiten großen Auto-Premiere zum CES-Auftakt. Faraday Future hat nicht nur einen klangvollen Namen, sondern geizt auch nicht mit teils großspuriger Rhetorik. So verkündete Entwicklungschef Nick Sampson zur Vorstellung des ersten produktionstauglichen Fahrzeugs der Firma gleich den Anbruch einer “neuen Ära der Mobilität”. Wie genau Faraday Future da die Führungsrolle übernehmen will, blieb auch beim zweiten CES-Auftritt der Firma unklar.
Denn während Elektro-Pionier Tesla die Produktion massiv ausbaut und die gesamte Industrie auf Elektro-Mobilität einschwenkt, wird Faraday Future sein in Las Vegas gezeigtes Modell FF91 erst im Jahr 2018 ausliefern können. Und dass der Prototyp den Bruchteil einer Sekunde schneller von 0 auf 100 Kilometer pro Stunde beschleunigen kann als das derzeit dynamischste Straßenfahrzeug, Teslas Model S, dürfte für das Ausfüllen dieser historischen Rolle kaum reichen. Zumal Faraday auch angesichts jüngster finanzieller Probleme des wichtigsten chinesischen Geldgebers Jia Yueting skeptisch beäugt wurde. Der hat mit LeEco einen weiteren Entwickler elektrischer und selbstfahrender Autos im Spiel.
Die Autokonzerne müssen ihre Wagen heute mit anderen Argumenten als früher an die Kunden bringen. “Wir wollten, dass die Farbpalette wie bei ihrem Lieblingspulli ist”, sagt Chrysler-Innendesignerin Cindy Juette zum “Portal”. Und beim Innenraum habe man sich am “modernen Architekturraum” orientiert. Einer Kunstgalerie etwa. Bei Faraday Future heißt es, man habe sich von einer Kabine der ersten Klasse in einem Flugzeug inspirieren lassen.
