Gurley, Rams continue strong start, rally past Cowboys 35-30

0

Todd Gurley scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 53-yard catch-and-run, Greg Zuerlein kicked a career-high seven field goals and the Los Angeles Rams beat the Dallas Cowboys 35-30 on Sunday.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Todd Gurley scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 53-yard catch-and-run, Greg Zuerlein kicked a career-high seven field goals and the Los Angeles Rams beat the Dallas Cowboys 35-30 on Sunday.
Gurley finished with 215 total yards – 121 rushing and 94 receiving – as the Rams overcame two first-half touchdowns from Ezekiel Elliott the day before a federal appeals court hearing related to the star Dallas running back’s blocked six-game suspension over a domestic incident in Ohio.
The Rams (3-1) rallied from 11 points down late in the first half and matched their start from a year ago, when they went 1-11 the rest of the way as No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff was sitting and later lost the first seven starts of his career.
Goff showed more poise in first-year coach Sean McVay’s offense, throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He has seven TD passes and one interception this season.
The Cowboys (2-2) are already a loss shy of their total from last season when Dak Prescott was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Elliott led the league in rushing, also as a rookie.
Terrance Williams dropped a potential tying 2-point conversion pass on the third try midway through the fourth quarter after Prescott’s 28-yard scoring toss to James Hanna.
Center Travis Frederick was called for holding when Prescott ran in the first attempt. Dallas got another shot after a defensive holding call.
Gurley had a 12-yard catch on third-and-5 to help the Rams get to the two-minute warning before Zuerlein’s seventh field goal, a 33-yarder with 1:55 remaining. Gurley had 30 touches – 23 carries and a team-high seven catches.
The Cowboys reached midfield in the final minute, but Elliott’s catch inside the Rams 40 on fourth-and-10 was about a yard short of the first down, clinching LA’s win.
Zuerlein’s previous career high was five field goals in a 22-7 win over Denver in November 2014. He had a 44-yarder on the final play of the first half, and the long was from 49.
The Cowboys held the Rams to 131 yards in the first half, but the absence of All-Pro linebacker Sean Lee because of a hamstring injury showed up after halftime. After punting on their first possession of the second half, the Rams scored five straight times.
Elliott had 85 yards on 21 carries and backup Alfred Morris finished with 76 – 70 coming on his career-long run to set up Elliott’s second TD. The 1-yard plunge came after a review overturned a touchdown. Both times, Elliott took the ball to his mom in a field-level suite behind the end zone.
Prescott was 20 of 36 for 252 yards with three touchdowns.
AWKWARD CELEBRATIONS
Rams receiver Robert Woods ran off to celebrate what he thought was a touchdown in the first half, not realizing officials had ruled the play in the back of the end zone incomplete. The call was held up on review and was the second of coach Sean McVay’s two failed challenges in the first half, resulting in him being unable to challenge the rest of the game.
Brice Butler of the Cowboys immediately turned to Dez Bryant to start a celebration and didn’t see an official calling his toe-dragging catch in the end zone incomplete.
Tight end Jason Witten had to interrupt the celebration, but that was about the time officials changed the call. The ruling of a TD was confirmed after a review. Both plays were in the second quarter.
ANTHEM WATCH
The Cowboys stood on their sideline for the national anthem, as they had done every week before the Monday night game in Arizona. Bryant said Friday that was the plan because their decision to kneel before then anthem and stand during the singing in Arizona was their response to President Donald Trump’s comments in Alabama the previous Friday. Rams outside linebacker Robert Quinn stood holding his right fist over his head while punter Johnny Hekker put his arm around Quinn.
UP NEXT:
Rams: First meeting next Sunday with Seattle, winner of three NFC West titles in the past four seasons.
Cowboys: Green Bay returns to Arlington next Sunday after beating the top-seeded Cowboys on their home field in a divisional playoff last January.

Japan makes sake tax-free for foreigners

Foreign tourists now can buy sake and other alcoholic beverages tax-free at breweries and distilleries in Japan.
Foreign tourists now can buy sake and other alcoholic beverages tax-free at breweries and distilleries in Japan.
Launched on Sunday, the tax-free program is expected to give a further boost to already brisk exports of sake and make tours to breweries, wineries and distillers more popular among visitors to the country, industry people said. Under the program, if a foreign tourist buys a 720-milliliter „seishu“ sake bottle at a shop on the premises of a government-designated brewery where the sake was produced, the 86.4-yen liquor tax and the 8 pct consumption tax will be exempted. Since July, the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association has offered workshops for operators of breweries to help them get prepared for an increase in visitors from other countries.

Marilyn Manson injured after stage prop topples over

0

His current tour is „on pause“ as a result.
Marilyn Manson’s tour is „on pause“ after a large stage prop fell on and injured the singer Saturday night during his show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.
Numerous videos taken by audience members showed the prop falling on the shock rocker as he was performing „Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),“ his cover of the Eurythmics‘ 1983 hit, partway through his concert at the historic Manhattan music venue.
As Manson finished a verse, he appeared to turn to face a tall scaffolding – with two oversize props shaped like guns attached to it – at the back of the stage. Soon, the entire structure began tipping over onto Manson, who tried to shield himself with his right hand.
Crew members quickly rushed on stage to lift the prop back up and check on the singer. Videos of the incident captured a surreal scene, with some audience members gasping and others continuing to rock out; the band played on for several measures even after Manson went down. In one video, a few fans could be heard shouting encouragement at Manson to get back up.
Manson’s publicist did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Sunday afternoon.
„Manson suffered an injury towards the end of his incredible NYC show,“ a representative for the singer told Rolling Stone shortly after the show. „He is being treated at a local hospital.“
According to the magazine, Manson lay on the stage for several minutes, as workers yelled for ice to be brought out.
The rest of the show was canceled, according to several who posted about it on social media. Manson had just last week launched his „Heaven Upside Down“ tour to promote his tenth studio album, to be officially released on Oct. 6. The Hammerstein Ballroom concert was his third stop on the tour, which was set to end Dec. 9 at the Wembley Arena in London.
An Instagram post Sunday morning from Tyler Bates, Manson’s guitarist, indicated the tour would be on hold after the incident.
„Heading home,“ Bates wrote in the caption. „Manson will be back in action soon.“

O. J. Simpson took his prison wardrobe home with him

O. J. Simpson took all of his personal belongings — including a couple pairs of shoes, a hot plate and legal paper — with him when he was sprung from prison Sunday so that they wouldn’t wind up on the auction block, authorities told The Post.
“Those items that had his name on them — like if he had etched his name on a pair of shower shoes — we wanted him to take, because those things become marketable in the prison,” said Nevada Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Keast. “We don’t want to see those things on eBay.”
The Juice had packed the items in the three microwave-sized boxes that accompanied him when he walked free under cover of darkness .
It’s the first time Keast knows of that the department has had to take the extra step to “keep order” after a celebrity leaves the lock-up.
“We have never had anyone in our custody that is this high-profile,” she said.
Simpson was granted parole in July and released Sunday after doing nine years of a maximum 33-year sentence for robbing a pair of sports-memorabilia moguls in Las Vegas in 2007.
He was loaded into a van when he left the prison, but his destination was unknown. He is rumored to be staying with friends in a gated community in a wealthy Las Vegas suburb, CNN reported.
Pal Tom Scotto has offered to put Simpson up in his Naples, Fla. pad, but Keast did not see him when the van picked up the ex-con.
“It was not someone I recognized — just a driver,” she said.

Trump again undercuts his secretary of State, dashing potential progress on North Korea

0

A day after Rex Tillerson suggested a possible diplomatic breakthrough with nuclear North Korea, President Trump on Sunday undercut his top diplomat, saying the secretary of State was “wasting his time” trying to negotiate with „Little Rocket Man,“ North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Just a day after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson suggested a possible diplomatic breakthrough with nuclear-armed North Korea, President Trump on Sunday undercut his top diplomat, saying Tillerson “is wasting his time.”
The stunning rebuke was the latest incident in which Trump has publicly contradicted Tillerson and quickly dashed any hope for progress in easing perilously volatile tensions with the government in Pyongyang, which has threatened to destroy the United States just as Trump has threatened the same against North Korea.
Tillerson, amid a whirlwind series of meetings on Saturday in Beijing with China’s top leaders, told reporters that the United States had opened direct “lines of communication” with North Korea over its aggressive program to build a nuclear arsenal.
“We’re not in a dark situation, or blackout,” Tillerson said in a news conference at the U. S. Embassy, with Ambassador to China Terry Branstad seated at his side.
“We can talk to them, we do talk to them.”
The comments suggested that Washington was perhaps finally moving toward accepting the reality of Kim Jong Un having nuclear weaponry and instead attempting to contain him, as many foreign leaders and some former American officials have urged.
But within hours of Tillerson’s pre-dawn return to Washington on Sunday, Trump took to Twitter from his weekend retreat at his New Jersey golf club.
“I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” Trump wrote, using a derisive nickname he has created for Kim.
„Save your energy, Rex. We’ll do what has to be done!“, Trump added, once again injecting a measure of instability into the fraught relations with the isolated, nuclear-armed country — and with his own secretary of State.
Later Sunday, Trump did not let up. “Being nice to Rocket Man hasn’t worked in 25 years, why would it work now?” he tweeted. “Clinton failed, Bush failed and Obama failed. I won’t fail.”
It apparently escaped Trump’s attention that Kim Jong Un was 8 years old 25 years ago — though he is the heir in a dynastic ruling family.
While Trump has resorted to bellicose rhetoric with North Korea, Tillerson has repeatedly advocated for diplomacy, with support from Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis. Also, Tillerson and the U. S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, had been making progress in getting international approval for ever-tougher economic sanctions aimed at pressuring Pyongyang by squeezing the country’s economy.
Yet that gulf in approach — diplomacy versus military threat — seemed wider than ever after Trump’s mockery of his advisor.
In a White House known for chaos and mixed messages, Trump has also clashed repeatedly with other top aides, including Mattis and economic advisor Gary Cohn; on Friday, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price was pushed to resign. But belittling the Cabinet member who is traditionally first among equals is remarkable.
Trump has insisted that a military operation is a real possibility, but most experts agree that war on the Korean peninsula would quickly cost thousands of lives.
The public scolding also raises questions more than ever before about how long Tillerson will remain in office. Already, rumors have been swirling that he was pondering resignation from a job he has said he never wanted. The former chief executive of Exxon Mobil has denied he was planning to leave his position, though that was before the weekend kerfuffle.
In a rare moment of candor in July, Tillerson expressed frustration with the bureaucracy of the State Department and diplomacy in general. And in apparent allusion to Trump, he said he missed being the “ultimate decision-maker” as he was as CEO.
Veteran diplomats and foreign policy experts in the United States and elsewhere have been shocked by Trump’s blithe belittling of his secretary of State, especially considering its potential to diminish Tillerson’s leverage and influence in the world.
Former State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said on Twitter that „undercutting your Secretary of State publicly is a cardinal sin of diplomacy.“
„Unpresidential,“ he added.
Michael McFaul, a former U. S. ambassador to Russia, said via Twitter: “I’m hoping this is some clever good cop, bad cop strategy for dealing with North Korea. I fear it’s not.”
Just as observers wonder at Trump’s treatment of Tillerson, many are taken aback by the president’s seeming glee at baiting North Korea’s Kim, a thin-skinned, isolated leader but one with an increasingly advanced nuclear capability. The president’s latest tweets brought new expressions of alarm for suggesting Trump’s fundamental lack of understanding of the gravity of the crisis.
Some of that concern came from Trump’s own political party.
Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said some sort of diplomatic breakthrough was essential. “If we don’t ramp up the diplomatic side, it’s possible that we end up cornered,” Corker said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Earlier this year, Trump also touched off a major crisis in the Persian Gulf region that put him at odds with Tillerson.
Trump sided with Saudi Arabia against its tiny neighbor Qatar. He accused Qatar of being a major “funder” of terrorism, although far more terrorists have come from Saudi Arabia. He also backed a blockade against the gas-rich emirate, even though it is the site of the region’s largest U. S. military base.
Tillerson struggled to defuse those tensions, meeting with and cajoling both the Saudis, who were allied with Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, and the Qataris. He publicly called for an end to the blockade, only to be contradicted less than an hour later by Trump, who insulted Qatar in remarks from the Rose Garden.
Even before Trump’s Sunday tweets, administration aides were attempting to tamp down the expectations that Tillerson’s comments had generated on Saturday. Tillerson’s White House-appointed media advisor, R. C. Hammond, said that North Korea still has indicated no interest or inclination to hold serious discussions.
“It’s not a situation where we are sending smoke signals over the DMZ,” Hammond told American reporters in Beijing. “But what it doesn’t mean is there is an organized negotiation or there’s any sort of larger talks. That is not happening.”

Warszawa: Przed Sądem Najwyższym protest KODu przeciwko zmianom w sądownictwie

0

Część protestujących trzymała flagi UE i Polski. Uczestnicy skandowali: „wolne sądy“, „wolna Polska“, „wolne media“, „konstytucja“ i „marionetka“.
Krzysztof Łoziński, w swoim wystąpieniu nawiązał do książki Georga Orwella „Rok 1984“.
Złożony do Sejmu prezydencki projekt nowej ustawy o Sądzie Najwyższym wprowadza m.in. możliwość wniesienia do SN skargi na prawomocne orzeczenie każdego sądu, zapis by sędziowie SN przechodzili w stan spoczynku w wieku 65 lat z możliwością wystąpienia do prezydenta o przedłużenie orzekania oraz utworzenie Izby Dyscyplinarnej z udziałem ławników.

Lil Wayne misses his own concert because he wouldn't go through venue security: report

The New Orleans-born rapper didn’t want to face a „standard“ security check.
Lil Wayne left fans in the cold Saturday (Sept. 30) after he missed his own concert at the Fall Ball in Columbia, S. C. The New Orleans-born rapper refused to go through „standard safety procedures“ at the Colonial Life Arena, according to a statement obtained by The (Charleston) Post and Courier.
„The safety of its patrons, its performers, and its staff members is and continues to be the No. 1 priority for Colonial Life Arena,“ read the arena’s statement, according to the newspaper’s website. „While we regret the artist’s decision not to perform, Colonial Life Arena is not willing to bypass its security standards and jeopardize the safety of its patrons, performers, or staff members.“
Refunds are being offered for fans who were hoping to see Lil Wayne, who was scheduled to perform alongside his frequent collaborator 2 Chainz as well as Tory Lanez and Cardi B.
