LONDON (AP) – British Prime Minister Theresa May has lambasted the behavior of Boeing after it complained that Canadian rival Bombardier used unfair government subsidies to sell planes at artificially low prices.
Addressing a conference in London, May said Thursday that Boeing’s behavior « is not the sort of behavior we expect from a long-term partner » and that it « undermines that partnership. »
The government has many dealings with Boeing, particularly in defense.
May’s comment follows the preliminary decision by the U. S.’s Department of Commerce to slap an almost 220 percent tariff on Bombardier’s C series aircraft, which threatens more than 4,000 jobs in Northern Ireland.
May said she was working with the Canadian government and leaders in Norther Ireland to « impress » on the U. S. government the importance of Bombardier to Northern Ireland.

iPhone X vs Samsung Galaxy Note 8: supersize meets super-supersize

0

The iPhone X is Apple’s biggest phone and the Galaxy Note 8 is one of Samsung’s biggest, so how do they compare?
The iPhone X is the biggest phone Apple’s ever made, which means its biggest rival could well be the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 – Samsung’s latest phablet flagship.
Both phones are also very powerful, very expensive and packed full of high-end tech and features. But in a lot of ways they’re very different.
With that in mind we’ve compared all their key points so you can see where they’re similar and where they’re not.
The iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 have some design similarities. Both have a glass back and a metal frame for example, though the corners on the iPhone X are more curved and it has almost no bezel on the front, with just a tiny notch at the top for the front-facing camera and sensors.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is light on bezel too, but not to the same extent, as it has a thin strip both above and below the display. Speaking of the display, we’ll cover that more below, but from a design perspective you can’t ignore the fact that it’s curved, while the iPhone X’s is flat.
The two phones have different weights and dimensions of course, with the iPhone X coming in at 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm and 174g, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is larger and heavier at 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6mm and 195g.
Both phones are dust and water resistant. The Note 8 is IP68 certified, so it can be submerged up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes, while the iPhone X is IP67 certified, meaning it can be submerged up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
However, while it’s not quite as waterproof, the iPhone X may well be tougher, as Apple claims it has used the toughest glass ever to grace an iPhone on both the front and the back.
And the colors differ, with the iPhone X launching in just Space Grey and Silver, while the Galaxy Note 8 is available in Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Orchid Grey and Deep Sea Blue.
The screen is the most obvious element of the iPhone X, as it fills almost the entire front of the phone. Apple’s even ditched the home button in order to leave more screen space, and lost the fingerprint scanner in the process.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is also almost all screen, though has slightly more bezel, and has retained its fingerprint scanner, moving it to the back.
The iPhone X’s display is a 5.8-inch 1,125 x 2,436 OLED Super Retina display with a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch, while the Galaxy Note 8’s is a 6.3-inch 1,440 x 2,960 OLED screen with a pixel density of 521 pixels per inch.
So Samsung’s is both larger and sharper, and both phones use OLED, allowing for superior contrast and vibrant colors.
Both phones also support HDR, but Apple’s screen adds 3D Touch and True Tone into the mix.
The former lets the display respond differently to different levels of pressure – for example opening a menu if you to tap hard, and launching an app if you use a light tap. The latter automatically adjusts the white balance based on the light in your environment.
Of course, Samsung’s screen is curved, while the iPhone X is flat, and that’s more than just an aesthetic decision from Samsung, as it also allows you to swipe across the edges to bring up menus and shortcuts.
Neither of these phones should leave you wishing for more power. The iPhone X uses a new A11 Bionic chipset. It’s a six-core one and a substantial upgrade in power over the iPhone 7 ’s.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 meanwhile uses either an octa-core Snapdragon 835 chipset or an octa-core Exynos 8895 one depending on where you are in the world, but they’re both top-end and the Note 8 is an exceedingly powerful phone.
It also has 6GB of RAM, and while Apple hasn’t revealed how much RAM the iPhone X has all the evidence so far points to 3GB.
This all sounds like it should work in the Note 8’s favor, but Apple’s previous quad-core chipset could hold its own against octa-core ones, so this new six-core one is likely to deliver top performance.
As for the OS, you get Android Nougat on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and iOS 11 on the iPhone X. If you’ve used an Android or iOS handset before you’ll know what to expect here, but iOS is a bit different on the iPhone X, as in place of the physical home button you can swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to return to your home screen.
Another difference in interaction comes from the addition of an S Pen stylus with the Note 8, letting you sketch and hand write on the phone.
There’s a dual-lens 12MP camera on the iPhone X, with one f/1.8 wide-angle lens and one f/2.4 telephoto one. The combination allows for optical zoom and both lenses have optical image stabilization (OIS), so your photos come out clearer.
It’s also got depth sensing skills, allowing you to blur the background of an image for a bokeh effect, and Apple has put a big focus on augmented reality (AR), with the new snapper allowing you to essentially project video games onto tables, view the constellations around you by looking at them through the camera, and more.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 also has dual 12MP cameras, but they have f/1.7 and f/2.4 apertures, meaning it should be able to take in even more light than the iPhone X’s when using the wide-angle lens.
The Note 8 is also capable of optical zoom and sports OIS. Importantly, it also takes great photos in our tests, though it lacks the advanced AR skills of Apple’s and it’s not quite as adept at video recording, at least on paper, as it can shoot in 4K at 30fps, while the iPhone X can do so at 60fps.
There’s a similar selection of similarities and differences with their front-facing cameras. The Note 8 has an 8MP f/1.7 one, while the iPhone X has a 7MP f/2.2 one.
That sounds like a win for Samsung, but there’s also a face scanner on the iPhone X, letting you unlock your phone and authorize purchases just by looking at the screen. The Note 8 has a similar feature but Apple’s is more advanced and tougher to trick.
As such it’s also able to power other experiences, such as animating emoji to match your expressions.
Apple hasn’t revealed the size of the iPhone X’s battery, but there’s evidence of a 2,716mAh one, and Apple has said that it can last for up to 12 hours of internet use or 13 hours of video. It also supports wireless charging, and can apparently go from zero to 50% in 30 minutes when plugged in.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 also supports both wireless and fast charging, and it has a 3,300mAh battery which lasts all day in our tests.
The iPhone X is a whole new level of expensive, starting at $999/£999/AU$1,579 for a 64GB model and rising to $1,149/£1,149/AU$1,829 for a 256GB one.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is far from cheap either though at $929/£869/AU$1,499. That’s for a 64GB model, which is the only size it currently comes in, but it does also have a microSD card slot, which the iPhone X doesn’t.
The iPhone X is Apple’s vision for the future of smartphones, and with an all-screen front, an advanced face scanner, AR features, loads of power, a refined design and a new screen and camera the company might be onto something.
It’s undeniably similar to the Note 8 in a lot of ways – both have edge-to-edge OLED screens, dual-lens 12MP cameras, metal and glass builds, water resistance and powerful chipsets, but there’s lots different too.
Apple’s phone puts the focus on face scans, while you’re more likely to secure the Note 8 with a fingerprint, and you get a stylus too with the Note 8, which you don’t with the iPhone X. They also run different operating systems and the iPhone X is more expensive.
But ultimately they’re both high-tech phablets, and likely to be among the best phones of the year.

If you only pay for one month of PS Plus free games make it this one

0

MGS5: The Phantom Pain is free for the month of October on Sony’s service. Here’s why you need to play it.
The free games you get with a PlayStation Plus subscription can be a bit hit and miss, but this month includes what is hands down the most interesting game of recent years, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
Now, to be clear, we’re not claiming the final part of the Metal Gear saga is a perfect game. Its main issue is its second half, which is patently unfinished.
Missions simply repeat themselves on a harder difficulty (complete with completely incongruous story elements left unchanged), and the story itself just kind of peters out without any real resolution or conclusion.
But underneath the rough edges, The Phantom Pain has one of the most solid stealth games ever made at its core.
The open world and its missions are truly open, and can be approached in any way you please. Sure you could rush into the meeting between the three arms dealers guns blazing, but if you think a little more tactically then you can pull off neat tricks like planting a C4 explosive on the back of one of their jeeps and letting them deliver the explosive themselves.
MGS5 is the culmination of years of iteration of the stealth formula by Kojima and his team, it’s the most complete it’s ever been, and, thanks to Kojima’s untimely departure from Konami, it’s the most complete its ever likely to be.
You owe it to yourself to play MGS5, and getting it free as part of a PS Plus subscription is the perfect way to do so.
The way PlayStation Plus’s free games work is that while you have a subscription, you have the ability to download certain games for free every month. You’re free to keep and play the games for as long as your subscription is active, even if you need to reinstall them after deleting them.
We’ve collected together the cheapest PlayStation Plus subscriptions below.

Toshiba $18 billion sale of chip unit finally signed, legal challenges remain

0

Japan’s Toshiba Corp said on Thursday it had signed an $18 billion deal to sell its chip unit to a consortium led by Bain Capital LP, overcoming a key – albeit not its last – hurdle as it scrambles for funds to stave off a potential delisting.
TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s Toshiba Corp said on Thursday it had signed an $18 billion deal to sell its chip unit to a consortium led by Bain Capital LP, overcoming a key – albeit not its last – hurdle as it scrambles for funds to stave off a potential delisting.
The sale of the unit – the world’s second biggest producer of NAND chips – was agreed last week after a tortuous auction process but the signing was delayed because consortium member Apple Inc demanded new terms on chip supply, sources familiar with the matter have said.
The deal will see Toshiba reinvest in the unit and together with Hoya Corp, a medical technology firm that also makes parts for chip devices, Japanese firms will hold more than 50 percent of the business – a keen wish of the Japanese government.
A Japanese state-backed fund and bank have also expressed their interest in investing in the future subject to certain conditions, Toshiba said in a statement.
“With this deal, a lot of risks for Toshiba have disappeared. It can go back to being a normal company,” said Hideki Yasuda at Ace Research Institute.
Pressure from the Japanese government, changing alliances among suitors and a slew of revised bids has drawn out the auction over nine months – heightening the risk that the deal may not close before the end of Japan’s financial year in March as regulatory reviews usually take at least six months.
If the deal does not close before then, Toshiba – hurt by liabilities at is now bankrupt nuclear unit Westinghouse – is likely to end a second consecutive year in negative net worth, putting pressure on the Tokyo Stock Exchange to strip it of its listing status.
The sale also faces legal challenges from Western Digital, Toshiba’s chip venture partner and rejected suitor, which is seeking an injunction to block any deal that does not have its consent.
Western Digital, one of world’s leading makers of hard disk drives, paid some $16 billion last year to acquire SanDisk, Toshiba’s chip joint venture partner since 2000. It sees chips as a key pillar of growth and is desperate to keep the business out of the hands of rival chipmakers.
In addition to Apple, Bain’s consortium includes South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix, as well as Dell Inc [DI. UL], Seagate Technology Plc and Kingston Technology.
Under the deal, Toshiba will hold 40.2 percent of voting rights in the chip unit and Hoya Corp will own 9.9 percent, while other members will hold a combined 49.9 percent, according to SK Hynix.
In a move to address anti-trust concerns that may come up in a regulatory review. Toshiba said SK Hynix would be firewalled from accessing proprietary information that belonged to the chip unit and would not be permitted to own more than 15 percent of voting rights for 10 years.

Hugh Hefner’s Wiki: Cause of Death, Wife, Net Worth, Kids & 5 Facts to Know

0

Hugh Hefner was the man who founded Playboy and forever changed the way women were personified in men’s magazines. Called an exploiter by many, Hefner was defiant till the end.
Hugh Hefner is the man who liberated America’s sexuality! It’s a pretty tall claim, but if anyone has ever come close wearing this mantle, it is the founder of the Playboy magazine Hugh Hefner. Hefner was an American magazine publisher, editor, and businessman, best known as the editor-in-chief and publisher of Playboy magazine which he started in 1953. He was also the founder and chief creative officer of the publishing group who operates the magazine, Playboy Enterprises. Hefner passed away on Wednesday, September 27,2017, at his home in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California. How did Hugh Hefner die? According to reports, Hugh Hefner’s cause of death is due to natural causes, and he died in his Playboy Mansion near Beverly Hills, California. Hefner was well-known all over the world over the last seven decades thanks to his businesses and his own lavish, promiscuous personal life that seemed straight out of a man’s fantasy book. Here are some details from Hugh Hefner’s wiki.
Hugh Hefner was born on April 9,1926, in Chicago, Illinois, to Grace Caroline and Glenn Lucius Hefner, both teachers by profession. Hugh Hefner’s age was 91 years at the time of his death. Hefner often described his family as “conservative, Midwestern and Methodist.” After finishing his high school studies at Steinmetz High School Hefner worked as a writer for a military newspaper in the U. S. Army for a couple of years during the World War II. Later, he graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign with a B. A. in psychology and a double minor in creative writing and art before studying sociology for a semester at the Northwestern University. Hefner dropped out soon and started working as a copywriter for Esquire. However, all this while Hefner was dreaming of starting his own magazine, and in 1953 he took the plunge.
Hefner opted for a mortgage, secured a bank loan of $600, raised around $8,000 from 45 investors and launched the Playboy magazine with its first issue featuring Hollywood sex bombshell Marilyn Monroe. The first issue of Playboy sold over 50,000 copies, and Hefner never looked back again. His magazine became the emblem of the sexual revolution and advertised itself as such. Though many people over the years have called Playboy vulgar, Hefner always defended it as a barometer of America’s permissiveness. Though many puritanical men and outraged feminists railed against Playboy and Hefner, Playboy ’s circulation reached 1.0 million by 1960 and peaked at 7.0 million during the 1970s. It took the combined might of the Internet and the porn industry to make the readers of Playboy abandon their favorite magazine in recent years. At the time of his death, Hugh Hefner’s net worth was a cool $50.0 million, way down from a peak of $200.0 million during Playboy ’s heydays.
Was Hugh Hefner married? In fact, he married thrice with his first two marriages ending in a divorce. Hefner’s first wife was Mildred Williams whom he married in 1949 and with whom he had two children named Christie and David. The couple divorced in 1959 after which Hefner went on to have countless affairs with women including many of his magazine models. In 1986, Hefner married the Playmate of the Year Kimberley Conrad even though their age difference was 36 years. He had two sons, Marston Glenn and Cooper Bradford, with Conrad. His third marriage was with Crystal Harris on December 31,2012, when he was 86 years old and Harris just 26 years. Although Hefner was active in philanthropy and often donated to charitable causes, the perception about his magazine overshadowed everything else. With his death, America has lost a man who brought nudity out of the closet and provided a platform for men and women to live out the fantasy life they had dreamed of. The controversial Hugh Hefner who symbolized the American sexual revolution is no more!

Delivering aid to Puerto Rico a challenge for volunteers

0

People across the US mainland are stepping up to help Puerto Ricans, but getting the aid there is proving difficult.
Non-perishable goods and other donations sit at Puerto Rico’s main port of San Juan and have yet to be delivered — or are held up at ports in the US mainland. And only a handful of flights are traveling to the island.
Students at a New York high school are filling up their school’s auditorium with water, boxes of cereal and canned foods but can’t find a way to send them to the island.
Sending donations to Puerto Rico could cost the Comsewogue High School in Long Island between $17,000 and $25,000, school officials told CNN affiliate WABC reported .
« I have probably called over 25 to 30 companies. All through Long Island, a couple of companies down in Florida, » Vince Roman, a physical education teacher, told WABC.
In New Orleans, a group of pilots and aviation enthusiasts, who collected about 25,000 pounds of supplies and flew them to Texas after Hurricane Harvey, are shifting their focus to Puerto Rico.
« Puerto Rico, USVI, and other areas affected have no idea how many people are behind them and ready to assist! We’re anxious to get down there!, » the Cajun Airlift group posted on Facebook.
Volunteers at Casa Puertorriqueña, a group that organizes the annual Puerto Rican Parade in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, have filled up at least eight trucks with everything from flashlights and batteries to canned goods and baby diapers, CNN affiliate WGN-TV reported.
But the donated goods remain in a warehouse.
« We can’t get these companies to fly this stuff to Puerto Rico, » said Vilma Colom, community outreach and engagement volunteer at Casa Puertorriqueña told WGN-TV. « We’re not getting the help that we need like everybody else has gotten during these crises. »
Members of the Puerto Rican community in Los Angeles are also mobilizing to send help.
They turned a Cuban supper club in Hollywood into a donation center and slowly have been sending supplies.
« We have our hands tied in a lot of ways but we are not stopping, » said Ana Miró, a member of Los Angeles for Puerto Rico.
The group already sent some donations on Delta and JetBlue relief flights and plan to send more aid in the coming weeks.
« We plan to gather things and keep sending them, » Miró said. « We are not stopping for any reason. »
